Irish travel or history books for children

Can anyone suggest children's books on Irish history or travel? Something that will help to teach them about Ireland before we go. Thanks.

Hi Doriana. I don't know how old the kids are, but check the Eyewitness series, available at most book stores. They usually have something about everything! Also, look for books on Irish myths, legends and folktales. There must be plenty out there on Irish castles and castle life. Just some thoughts. Good luck!

I'm not personally familiar with any of them, but Longitude Books (whose recommendations I've always found reliable in the past) has a whole page of recommendations of children's books about Ireland. See http://www.longitudebooks.com/find/d...land/mcms.html

Doriana - I'd caution you to review the books on myths and legends before you pass them on, especially if your children are very young. Some are very depressing and a bit scary. Also, we've listened to some great Irish tales on cd (Tales from Old Ireland), from a company called Barefoot Books. The cd is available online at www.barefootbooks.com. They are read by an Irish folk singer - Maura O'Connell.

Thanks all, particularly Bree -- the longitude books site had some great recommendations.

you can read and print stories for free at mainlesson.com it is a huge site but if you trawl through it you'll find lots of celtic tales and fables.
