He will be fine entering Ireland -- he will be fine reentering the States. The spanners in the works are the check in desk and gate agent at your departure airport.

You can have all the law in the world on your side -- and those agents can screw things up if THEY think he needs 6 months validity. They are the ones that will allow him to fly or not. The main problem is if you are flying from a secondary US airport with a connection through a larger hub. Eventually it would be cleared up but might need a supervisor's intervention. So my advice is to get to the airport with PLENTY of time.

Passport or passports ?
Back to some facts :
Renewal of a passport costs 110 $
Validity of your passport is 10 years.

So your economy is NOT 200$, not even 110 $ but something like 5 to 10$ per passport.

travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/passports/FAQs.html

Now from the same site, a click on the country 'Ireland' lets you come here
travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/country/ireland.html

They say 'PASSPORT VALIDITY:

Valid for the duration of your stay in Ireland'

Which I'm not sure I understand but they give a phone number.

My passport is valid until 2021. His is until June 2017.

We leave from Chicago with a direct flight to Ireland. And then on the way home leave Ireland with a direct flight to Chicago.

There will be no consequences for not renewing at the port of entry. Ireland, like the UK, requires only that the passport be valid for your projected length of stay. None of this six-month BS like the continent. If your airline raises questions, refer them to the law. Bring a printout. If they still obstruct, sue them and become a millionaire.

Renew it now. I mailed my passport renewal (exp. April 2017) on Jan. 6. It arrived Jan 8; I received my new passport Jan 20!

Must be slow this time of year.

There's something called "Schengen Borders Agreement" in Europe ; Ireland is not one of the Schengen countries, nor is the UK (incl. NI).
If your passport has an expiration date of less than 6 mo. you can be denied entry to a Schengen country (Norway, France, others)

So if you're considering travelling outside Ireland, best to renew before you leave.

You should go without him!

Your passport has lots of time, his expires this year (because he's cheap?).
Ireland is way more fun travelling single.

Go by yourself, you'll meet lots of great people and can go where and when you want!

Mcmick - not going without him. I enjoy his company and we will have a great time, together.
We do not plan on leaving Ireland. We will not even be going into Northern Ireland. We will be going to places from Dublin, Cong, Cork, Killarney, Killkenny, Galway, etc. We are choosing to stay in those areas as we do not have enough time to go to NI.
