IPhone GPS Travel in Europe
Next week we are travelling to Germany, with a drive through Prague. We are considering purchasing a GPS, but thought that an IPhone or IPod Touch with GPS would be more useful due to the other travel apps and entertainment for the trip.
I don't get good answers from AT&T or Apple. I hate spend $500 for an IPhone and service only to find that it doesn't work. Does anyone have experience with this?

The "GPS" on iPhone is an assisted GPS.

As you noted, Apple does not tell you this in a straight forward manner. http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html , it only says it is "assisted."
The problem is not that it does not work. It works in the Europe at a very high cost http://www.chicagotribune.com/travel...,7403227.story. The U.S. unlimited data plan does not extend to Europe. You need to add an international data plan: http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/in...ravel-tips.jsp . Even with this plan, it is very expensive.
If you want to use a GPS a lot, get a real GPS with European map preloaded; e.g. Garmin x7x series (270,275,370,770, etc). You get unlimited uses without a surprise bill waiting for you when you come home.

I was just reading on the istore site that they have an app that is a "TomTom". It will turn your iphone into a gps and I believe that it does not need an internet connection to function. It is expensive though, $99, but cheaper than a gps .
Damn, we need Robes for the infinitive answer.
