International Calling Cards

Anybody know of good international calling cards? Particularly from the UK to the US.

Emily, I purchased an American Express calling card when I was in London in June. It worked great and I have also used it since returning to the US.

"Consumer Reports" magazine (Jan 2000) recommended the following phone card for international calling: TTI Ultracard. To apply, call in the US, 800 477 9692. If you want to use it for international calls, you have to mention that. For any phone card, find out if there is a connection charge. With any calling card, find out if there is a connection charge in addition to the per-minute rate. I used the above card with calls from Europe (Oct 99, will use again this fall), as well as domestic calls, and found the rates so far to be very low.

There may very well be locally-purchased phone cards with pre-set amounts that may offer rates that are as good or better than the above. Perhaps someone else will chime in with a suggestion.

i need help with this too! i feel like i have looked everywhere, but to no avail. i just called the number above, and they quoted $1.19/min, plus a surcharge, from england to the us. is this normal? it seems a little high to me, but then again, i'm not expert. i have searched online under "calling card" "international call" etc. most of what i've come up with is pretty sketchy looking. they list outrageously low rates, but want me to give my credit card number over an insecure connection and they don't seem to have a number i can call for more info.

does anyone out there have suggestions for a reasonably priced way to call from durham, england, to beijing, china? and durham to the u.s.? i will be a student, living in a dorm, so i don't have my own phone line.

Try to find an MCI prepaid card. I bought mine at Costco for less than $20. I have used it to call the US from Germany, Italy, Switzerland, France, and England.

When you buy the card, you get a list of access numbers, a different number for each country. All you need is a dial tone. The cost for my card is 5.9 cents per unit. A call from Italy to US is 3 units per minute, Germany is 3 units per minute, England is 2 units per minute. Very cost effective. I used it this summer and it was great. (You can add more units easily, also.)

Deborah
