The International Agreement was put into effect before it was determined what organizations would issue IDPs--each country decides how it will be done.

No way that any organization is making much, if any, money off the program at $10 a pop.

AAA is a non-profit organization. I didn't say they were losing money (though they might be), but it can't be any big moneymaker for them either.

Thanks Antonio! I was wondering if there would be any problem with taking my expired license with me and just changing the expire date. Maybe I'll renew it when I renew my passport in a few years.

When exiting the autostrada near Perugia this March, everyone was being pulled over to check documents - and they wanted the International Drivers License, not our local one...I was glad i had it.

Up until the last coment about being puled over in Perugia, I wasn't going to get an IDP.

I'm rethinking that since I'll be in Tuscany next Friday.

A few years ago in Texas for the same $10 our drivers license office issued International licenses. While stationed in Germany, I had one renewed for the same time frame as my regular license which was 5 years. It was good to have in both Italy and Belgium where we hit road blocks and without them would have been sent back to the country we were entering from as some other drivers were.
