Our first trip to Rome. 5 nights in early April. How do these look, especially looking for input on location.

Any input on suggested areas to look would be appreciate if these don't seem ok. Thanks~

#1 No elevator. What floor is it on? Ceiling looks very low in kitchen and bedroom. Great location. You'd want air-conditioning in the summer, up in that attic, but not a problem in April.

#2 This seems to be on the street or a courtyard. Some people wouldn't like staying right off the street. OTOH, no problem with stairs. And a good location.

#3 Not a bad location either, especially if not one's first trip to Rome. Looks very small. No washer, no table to eat at, just a bar with stools. What floor is it on? Is there an elevator?

I feel that all three locations are very good. The Piazza Paridiso location going to be a bit busier during the daytime as there is a stall selling all kinds of things out of a van with a big tent and you are just a two minute stroll to the Campo dei Fiori. We just stayed in an apartment in this piazza and while we found the apartment very quiet it was a bit busy for us .....as soon as we stepped out the door but so close to
everything.

We have been to Rome multiple times, have always stayed in apartments but have liked Via Farnese off Via Giulia where our favorite our favorite apartment because the street is so quite. It was not available this trip. I personally would choose the Trastever apartment to get away from the crowds but for a first time visit you might prefer to be in the historic center where the other 2 apartments are. Just so you are aware the Trastevere apartment is no more then a 10 or 15 minute walk to Piazza Paradiso location and the third apartment about 10 minutes from there. Rome is,not very big and quite easily walked.

While I cannot say that we have walked the street the third apartment is on I would to a google street view but I generally know the area and it is nice and well located. In fact it is very near a restaurant we really like. I would choose the one that has the best ambiance or things that you are looking for...you won't go wrong.

I agree - you won't go wrong with any of these three.

That said, I too would suggest #1 (my choice for best location) or #2 for a first time visit.

Vicolo della Campanella is a little alley so traffic noise should not be a problem there.

The Campo area will be a bit noisier (early morning trucks arriving/setting up, late nights - young people hanging out).

The Trastevere apartment didn't list a street, but the map makes it appear in the pedestrian area near the river. If the map is accurate, that would be an easy walk across the river to most things. You could also catch the tram (#8)to Piazza Venezia nearby. If you end up there and that is your arrival city, you would take the local train from the airport (not the Leonardo Express) to Trastevere train station and catch the tram the rest of the way. The tram would also drop close to the Campo area after it crosses the river.

I would want to know which floor the first two apartments were on.

The fact that the first apartment is just under the roof (the meaning of "attico") might mean that it could be hot even in April, and I would definitely want to know what floor it's on, remembering that you have to add one to that number to get the American equivalent.

From the photos, the second apartment does seem to open right onto the street, without even an entry hall. Being right on the ground level, it might be rather damp in April. I don't know that I'd like to be at ground level in central Rome, with perhaps crowds of noisy tourists passing late into the night.

The third apartment is on the first floor, which is what Americans call the second floor. Even if it has no elevator, it shouldn't be hard to climb the steps. However, it does look tiny.

All things considered, I would prefer the locations of the first two. To be honest, other than the good locations, I would have some doubts about all three of them.

Based on location alone, I'd choose the Ghetto or the Trastevere. I like to be central but not on tourist-crazy block.

I love Campo dei Fiori, but I prefer to be "above " (north/north west) the campo.

Trastevere is a lovely neighbourhood but I would not stay there for your first visit to Rome. The Campo dei Fiori is a better location for sightseeing. Your very first pick "Central Attic" is my choice. What I love about it is the terrace. Not often included but wonderful for taking breakfast! Again, if stairs are an issue check with the owner if there is an elevator.

The #1 apartment is "3 floors" of steps / 70 steps.

We have done that in in Paris, twice. While we didn't love the steps ( especially when i decided to go back up for a sweater etc) the apartment was worth it. We would of course prefer a lift or something with less stairs, but if the apartment is worth it, we'd consider it.

The last 2 listings are really nice, but I have read quite a few negative comments about rentaloft here and on TA. Issues the agency themselves and also with several apartments. That worries me.

I think all your choices are in good locations.

Rome is a noisy city, lots of vespas. Whether a given apartment is more or less noisy is just a matter of degree. In early April, you can lessen the noise by keeping the windows closed. Unless there's a unusual heat wave.

Is it Rentaloft or Romeloft with bad reviews? Anyway, I'd avoid the agency with bad reviews.

I don't think Trastevere is bad for a first stay as long as your somewhat close to the Ponte Sisto and not on a busy traffic seat. It can be a 5-10 minute walk to the Campo. Rome's historic center (the part that is mainly pedestrian) is pretty compact. There's also the 116 electric bus that runs through that area that can take you close to the Vatican or Villa Borghese.

Have you looked at sites like Sleep in Italy or bb-rm.it? I don't see many people using airbnb and some that have ended up with a few problems.

The Rome Tourist Board website has listings. Some with contact info, but others without (they are not the best for up to date). You can search by area. There is only one apartment listed on there for Vicolo della Campanella (44), but it has nt e-mail or website listed (just means they are listed with the tourist board as a business). Many others will have their websites/e-mails. Use the advanced search tab on the right and select Center of Rome and which area you want to search.

Wow, DebitNM, you have given me two apartments that I want for my next trip to Rome.

We have stayed all over central Rome, and after a visit last time to the Villa Farnesina, I decided that next time, I wanted to stay near there. That's your #3 apartment in your OP.

Then, the rome-accomodation apartment: that is where we most often stay. Not that apartment, but more or less that exact area. And what a nice looking place.

I would choose either of those for myself. The former for a budget trip, maybe the latter for a tiny splurge.

For a first time visit, I don't think you can do better than the rome-accomodation.net apartment. IMO, it's perfect.
