Innsbruck next summer - any suggestions?

My wife and I will be in Salzburg and Innsbruck for three nights each in early July. We have a pretty good idea of what we want to see and do in the Salzburg area. How about Innsbruck?
We will have a rental car and would like to visit some nearby villages and (especially) do some not-too-strenuous hiking in the alpine areas.
What would be a good friendly hotel here? Any restaurant advice?

We stayed at the Holiday Inn at Innsbruck. Perfecctly OK but nothing special.

A cable car ride up the mountains above Innsbruck is well worthwhile.

There is an excellent restaurant in the old town near the main bridge over the Inn. I can't remember the name, but it is vaguely triangular shaped and has several floors.

Between Innsbruck and Saltsburg is Kaprun, which is well worth visiting, both for the views and the exciting ride! Also worth a visit is Werfen to visit the Eisriesenwelt Hohle or ice cave. It is a reasonably strenuous walk but worth the trouble. You need good shoes and a warm jacket. I believe that the salt cave is also worth visiting, but we haven’t (yet) managed that.

email me if you would like more.

I would certainly drive up to Seefeld, which is a delightful spa town with great facilities including a huge public sauna and swimming pool complex, a casino and some superb restaurants. We stayed at the Hotel Viktoria which was excellent but there are many hotels, and private accomodations available.

Great place. Do not know what you likes are but: Salzburg should take a day or three then, rent a car(or take a train), go to the little town of Faulensee, SWITZ. Short distance from Interlaken. Half the price w/better restaurants, plenty of motels. Take a lake steamer (waterborne bus) to some other towns, eat, drink, have fun. Meet some locals. Thousand of things to enjoy - like the food, and the people. WOW, you will LOVE it! Days left, go to Garmisch/Partenkirchen - ride a train to the top of Zugspitz - so inexpensive. Drink some beer. The BEST way to see the scenery of Austria is drive the valley roads, to Innsbruck, Garmisch, Mittenwald, we envy the joy waiting to be experienced..........good luck

I agree with the above poster about taking the Valley ride up to Garmish. You will pass Seefeld, Mittenwald and arrive at Garmish. You can do the whole area in two days. But just like any great town, you could stay a week in any one of them! Also, take a short hop up to Hall im Tirol, nice small town to explore....I love that region!
JOHN

Bill,

The Innsbruck zoo is worth a couple of hours if for no other reason because it offers you an opportunity to ride the incline cars to the top of the hills overlooking town. The zoo itself is a bit shabby but they have an interesting collection of wildlife indigenous to the alps.

I really enjoyed the Tivoli folklife museum in Innsbruck. You can also visit the Olympic Village there.

We have done that area frequently and usually stay in Garmisch and visit Innsbruck for the day, time permitting. I would recommend a drive from Innsbruck to Garmisch. Great scenery and Garmisch is a nice Bavarian town.
