Info on car side trips from Interlake to Geneva

My husband and I will be in Geneva 4 weeks in july-august. We will have a car and be in Interlaken area 5 days prior, then will have 2 days to drive to Geneva. We would love to go off the beaten path. Since we will be in Geneva 4 weeks we will have plenty of oppertunities to visit Montreux and lake towns by train and have read alot of info on this site about lake towns. Much thanks. Are there any villages or castles that are not very accessable without a car that would be of interest. We are thiking about not having hotel reservationsfor 1-2 nights, is this a mistake? Or, should we be ok without? I don't want to spend alot of time looking for affordable accomidations.
One last question, we would like to hot air baloon ride in OB, is this possible?
Thanks in advance, cgal

Can you tell me what your plans are for the 5 days in the Interlaken area? I don't want to repeat waht you may already be planning for thesea areas (e..g driving the Furka or Grimsel passes, seeing the castles at Thun and Spiez).

Hard to say about the hotels, July and August are very popular, and if you are in a very small town with only 2-3 hotels, these could fill up. Probably is OK, esp if the trip is not over a weekend, but you may have to go to more than one hotel to find a room, not sure if this is your idea of a relaxing holiday. Once your itinerary is a bit more set, I may be able to give some reccos.

Balooning is possible, I would contact your hotel in the OB and ask; I think the Gstaad valley is where more of this is done, but you may be able to take off from the Meringen area near Lake Brienz as well.

Get a good road map of Switzerland, it will be very helpful to you in going off the main highways, as you need to know the names of the varoius little towns you are heading towards and through, that is how the signage works on teh roads, there are basically no numbered roads other than the very main highways and even those are not really numbered on road signage, only on maps for the most part.

Hi cgal,

I don't think there's much between Interlaken & Geneva that will be "off the beaten track" or inaccessible without a car (hey, it *is* Switzerland!). But if I were you, I would spend those few days in the towns of Chateau d'Oex, Saanen, or Gstaad -- it's a gorgeous area. You can find out about them at www.gstaad.ch or www.chateau-doex.ch. Also, here are links to my "reviews" (w/photos) of Gstaad & Saanen:

For a neat castle experience, I suggest going to Gruyeres (though it is literally covered with tourists in July-August). In addition to the castle, you'll get the best cheese & cream (creme double) you've ever had! Here's a link to my "review" (w/photos) of Gruyeres:

Have fun!

ps, forgot to say that Chateau d'Oex is a huge center of hot-air ballooning, and was the homebase of a record-breaking flight a few years ago. Follow the links at their page --

For ballooning go to Chateau-d'Oex. Swandav said everything ... as usual.

One place I would recommend between Interlaken and Lake Geneva is Romainmotier with its Romanesque Abbey church. Very cute village too. Another idea is to take the route along Lac de Neuchatel with vineyards to visit (Boudry e.g.). Or stop in Murten, Fribourg, Romont ... so many picturesque towns!
