In Paris over a Sat. Evening through Tuesday - please help with planning my limited time.
I'll be in Paris for 4 nights early December. I'll arrive from the Netherlands on a Saturday evening and stay until my Wednesday flight back to the U.S. <BR>I'd like to get in some musueum time, but am unsure of what's open on Mondays and Tuesdays. I went to the Guimet twice last time (loved it! ... obviously) and visited the Louvre and the d'Orsay briefly, so I'd like to concentrate on the Carnavalet, possibly the Cognac-Jay and another stop at the d'Orsay.<BR>I'd appreciate some tips on which museums are open and best visited on what day, given my very limited time frame.<BR>I note from a recent post that Sundays are very busy at the major museums, so I'll take some long walks that day instead.<BR>How about the Eiffel Tower? Is Monday morning early a good time? I was in Paris during June on my last visit - the crowds were so incredible when I tried to visit the Tower that I just gave up and took a night cruise on the Seine instead.<BR>Thanks for any suggestions.

I know we went to the Musee Carnavalet on a Tuesday and it was free. I read it's open from Tues.-Sun. so you're covered. I'm not really sure about the fee schedule because the same day we went to Maison Victor Hugo and that was free also. So maybe Tues. are free? Guidebooks have prices listed though.<BR><BR>I didn't go but my guidebook shows d'Orsay as open each day except Mondays. <BR><BR>Best thing is to check a guidebook or the internet.

Do visit the Rodin museum and I second the Jacquemart-Andre. Also, I loved the Nissam Camondo museum - this one I particularly loved. All of these are small so you can visit them as time and where you are permits. I also thoroughly enjoyed the Carnavalet. These are museums not highly touted in guide books but excellent.

I was at the Carnavalet a couple of weeks ago, on a Sunday morning and it really wasn't that busy. It is quite big though, so you could certainly spend at least 3 hours wandering round. It depends how are interested you are in old paintings of Paris and artefacts from French history! But be warned, most of the explanations are in French. I advise taking a guidebook with a good section on the history of France/Paris so you can cross-reference all the different events that are covered.

I definitely second the Rodin and Nissim Camondo museums. Check closing days before you go...we stood outside a closed Nissim Camondo (Parc Monceau Metro station, walk thru the park) one morning because, oops, it wasn't open that day. I was less impressed with Picasso because the quantity of pictures is less than the quality, and they've more or less erased the interior features of the building its in. I loved the Carnavalet but Hanl is right. If you don't speak french try to find a guidebook beforehand...they did have a little giftshop. Check out the Mastisse-Picasso exhibit at the Grand Palais..the lines were very long when we were they, but it was the first Sunday it opened. You can read more about it at: www.matissepicasso.com. For some reason it was its at the Center Pompidou, but the actual exhibition was at the Grand Palais.

You might want to consider hiring a guide for one of your days to make the best use. There is a young American art student who gives wonderful tours. I met him several weeks ago also. He can be reached at [email protected]. He is VERY reasonable and knowledgeable and pleasant.<BR>The Louvre is closed on Tuesdays and the Orsay on Mondays. I believe that national museums are closed on Monday and Paris museums on Tuesday. You may want to consider one of the many special exhibits that have just opened--Manet and Velasquez at the Orsay, Matisse and Picasso at the Palais Royale, Modigliani at tthe Luxembourg, Max Beckman at Pompidou, and From Caillibot to Picasso at the Jacquemart-Andre. Also at the Hotel de Ville there is an exhibit about Yves Montand.

Most Paris municipal museums have been free all the time since December 2001, which is why someone above found both the Carnavalet and Maison de Victor Hugo free on Tues. -- the free ones are Carnavalet, Cognacq-Jay, Balzac, M de Hugo, Vie Romantique and the Musee d'art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.<BR><BR>You should be able to find opening times and days on www.paris.org, monuments and museums section. The museums pass page www.intermusees.com has a list of all museums on the pass and that might include times but that doesn't work sometimes. This city of Paris web site has info on municipal museums: www.paris-france.org/musees<BR><BR><BR>The standard closings are the opposite of the above -- the city museums tend to be closed Monday (Petit Palais, Zadkine, Carnavalet, Cognaq-Jay, Musique) and the national ones Tuesday (Picasso, CLuny, Pompidou), although there are some variations. They just closed the Orsay on Mondays so the biggest two wouldn't be on the same day, I guess. The Nissim Camondo is closed BOTH Mon and Tues.
