In Or Near Venice or Vicenza, Italy?

We will be ending our Croatia trip by spending a couple of days around Venice. We have both been there before so we would like to explore another town or two near Venice so we don't mind staying outside of Venice. I have been to Vicenza and would like to bring my boyfriend there to see it. I have also already been to Verona and Morrostica. Does anyone have a suggestion or two for affordable (below $100) accomodations within an hour of Venice? Any recommendations on other great towns easily accessible by train from Venice? Is Trieste worth spending some time in?

Other towns besides Vicenza well worth a visit IMO are Treviso, Asolo, Padova, Bassano ...

Cortina and the Dolomites are also within reach (- especially if you base in somewhere like Treviso ...)

Hope this helps ...

Padova is a wonderful town, 30 minutes by train from Venice. A university town, great pedestrian zone, with some great things to see: the city center in general, the Scrovegni chapel, the Saint-Anthony sanctuary.
Unless you are aan amateur of Palladio's architecture, I would prefer Padova over Vicenza.

Hi there,
It sounds to me that you are an experienced traveller, so I'm answering your question with a question. (hopefully this isn't too rude!) I'd love your insight.
My husband and I are thinking we'd like to take a side trip from our week in Venice and go to Croatia for 2 days or so. Would you recommend this? How would we get there from Venice?

Idealess, I have no problem with your question. Please take this info as a suggestion. I would not spend a week in Venice. Some people may disagree but I think 3 nights max is enough unless you are planning on taking day trips to Padua, Verona, Vicenza or other towns near Venice. I think you would easily be able to get to Croatia from venice by train. I haven't been to Croatia yet but through my research I think Rovinj would be a great place to spend a couple of days. You might even consider Ljubljana, Slovenia for a couple of nights. When are you going? We leave in 5 weeks for almost 3 weeks. I will post a trip report when I am done.

Thanks for the suggestions eurotraveller. I will look into them. We leave on the 28th of this month and return May6th. We will be going to Padova also. We're going to play it by ear regarding Croatia. I will be curious to read your post when you return. Enjoy.

Trieste isn't that touristy, but I love relaxing in town, spending all day at cafe's. It's a good place for a day and a half.
