Any suggestions on specific vineyards to see while in Beaune? Do any of you feel that visiting Burgundy was a high point of a trip to FR? I have a good friend who is French who feels that seeing Burgundy is not worth the time- to skip it and visit the Loire Valley instead. Any opinions on this thought?

From Beaune it's about a 10-minute drive to the little wine commune of Savigny-les-Beaune, which offers excellent values. The principal château there is open to visitors and has a nice tasting room.

South of Beaune is the splended Château de Meursault, with a vast wine cellar that serves as a sort of tasting room. Very atmospheric!
You can also visit such wine villages as Gevrey-Chambertin and Montrachet.
(Note: the first "t" in Montrachet is silent.)

You know, a big majority of French people don't know how to appreciate the treasures we have in France and always rush to the same campsite by the sea in August! (although it is changing now...)
Every region has its specifity. We don't have Chambord or Chenonceaux castles which are really superb but there are a lot of casles throughout Burgundy, abbeys, excavations, lakes, hills canal and rivers and vineyards. Burgundy is not only wine!
on www.cotedor-tourisme check for places of interest they will suggest more than 200. (and Côte d'Or is the quarter of Burgundy...)

The best thing to do is to see it by yourself and you'll tell your friend it is worth it!;-)

I will say that I loved Dijon. It was the only place I visited in Burgundy..but, my train trip from Dijon to Paris showed me how beautiful the Burgundy region is. It looked exactly as one would dream of the French countryside. Very green, rolling hills, pristine fields, dotted with livestock in pastures, vineyards, and villages with church steeples tucked in the valleys or standing guard on the hilltops.

It was truly one of the most beautiful landscapes I have ever seen. Next time, more time in Burgundy with a car rental, I think.

Yes, I've begun the report, but needs much editing. Also, I've started the overwhelming task of going through all these photos, turning, resizing, titling, etc. etc. for my on-line album. I want to get it all done, and then I will post it. For now, I've got Avignon and Villeneuve-lez-Avignon completed. Still have Nimes, Dijon, Paris, and Rouen. Whew!

This has been a great thread.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if the 'regulars' like Stu, Coco, Scarlett, StCirq, Underhill, Travelnut, Rex, Robespierre, et al, could get together in one place for a reunion of sorts?:-?
With all of their combined knowledge I would sign up for any tour they would create!
Does anyone have all of the names of the principal Fodorites like them? Have they all met? If not, who has met who?

In a few weeks now, I'll welcome ozgirl, akw7440, nsalerno, Ronda had to cancel her trip to Dijon unfortunately. Maybe Ira next year (yes THE one!)

I'll also meet Leeleelee in May and maybe rainbow007.

Michele - There have been many GTG's (get togethers) in Europe and the US. Do a search for GTG and you might find one near you. Trish and Budman have one planned in NYC June 3. Merci Coco for this post. I did not think of it anymore since I came back. It was fun reading it over. I remember that night real well. I drank the whole bottle of rosé while doing the post.
We are coming back and this time, I should do better for several reasons. I will be in Luzern for 4 days before coming to Dijon so the jet lag should be well gone. Second, my husband is joining me so we will venture out at night to good restaurants. However, I decided against renting a car so traveling by train is our main transportation. Can't wait to see Coco, Pascal, and les garçons, Léo et Axel.

Actually we had a very nice weather today, sunny and warm. I thought I would welcome my guests under the rain, but we had a very nice walk around the ducal palace, Notre Dame and the gargoyles look great in the sun (as well as St Michel Church). Voilà! 8-)
