Impressions of Lake Lugano, Como areas
There doesn't seem to be a lot of info or many good online guides for the Italian lake district. I'd like to hear some feedback from those of you who have been to Como or even southern Switzerland, like around Lake Lugano. What time of year is nice; is it humid in summer? Are there a lot of water activities or is it pretty laid back there where you spend most of the day just relaxing under the sun? Do you have recommendations on food and lodging (I'm looking for upscale places)?

Cadogan has a guide for Milan and the Lombardy Lakes that is very good. Passport Books, European Regional Guide has a title called Italian Lakes with lots of colored pictures. Do a search on this board for Lake Como and you'll find lots of info. The most upscale lodging you'll find is Villa d'Este in Cennobio on Lake Como, Grand Hotel Serbelloni in Bellagio on Lake Como, L'Albereta near Lake Iseo.

There are definitely things to "go see" unless you are turned off by the various palatial villas around the lake. Balbianello is a must-see wonder like Hearst Castle, in its own right. And many people rave about villa Carlotta (I think I have that name right) - - quite a bit more accessible at Tremezzo.

Best wishes,

Rex
I really like Lugano; it's one of my favorite places in Switzerland. My most recent visit was a brief overnight stay about 10 days ago. Even off season (VERY off season), it was delightful. Lugano has a few very nice museums (including the city's art museum and the Villa Favorita). The boat tours around the lake are very relaxing. The city park is one of the most pleasant places I can think of to relax on a warm sunny afternoon. Even in January, I liked it. I've been there in July, August, October, April and January. Late spring is charming; it's quite warm in summer, but there is a lot going on, especially in the weeks before and after Aug. 1, when there are fireworks each night at different spots in the area. Some other things to do include attending an outdoor opera performance at one of the castles in Bellinzona, taking the scenic valley train ride, or even trying your hand at the casino.
BTilke
