travelphile, I am happy to share the hotel I like.
It is Ca'Favretto San Cassino. It is a 3 star hotel.
The location is on the Grand Canal almost directly across from the Ca'deOro.
We always reserved a room in front, to get the view of the Grand Canal. I would think you could do this since you are not going until Sept. 5th.
Hotels like restaurants always are loved by some people and not by others but I would stay there again. Now when I go I stay at a small hotel in a small town in Veneto. We always found the staff to be very nice. If you go to Google and type in the hotels name you will see several websites. From the Grand Canal when you see the photo of the hotel, we liked the 2 window room on the left side of the hotel (and photo of course).
Travelphile. This hotel is not at the Piazza San Marco but certainly is easy walking distant. You go over the Rialto Bridge and follow the Grand Canal (which would be on your right). It is pass the fish market.
They do have a private dock in case you use the private taxi boats which is nice.
Have fun planning your trip!
BTW, do stop in for a drink at Harry's Bar. A bit expensive but a wonderful place to stop and rest and enjoy. Wouldn't eat there however. Food IMO not as good as years ago and very very expensive.
Take care.
