Without question the Vatican. My husband and went to Rome among a few other places and while everthing kept my mind totally in awe the Vatican was amazing. We signed up for a tour and it was the best. We had ear phones and a wonderful guide who pointed out lots of thing we might have missed going it alone. She also provided lots of in-depth information. The Louvre was grand and beautiful but I agree with the other posting, somewhat overhelming. I certainly hope that whatever you choose you have a grand adventure and come back oh so happy.

Just to update - After reading the posts, and considering some other things, we have decided to extend our stay in Rome, and skip Paris this year.
The Louvre would have been great, but with the eurostar prices, and the more expensive hotels in Paris, we are just going to stay and "do Rome right."
Thanks so much for all of the help. It has really been a blessing.

Since you are not really into art, you might consider the Musee d'Orsay rather than the Louvre. Impressionist art is more "accessible" than the art of many other periods. Another lovely museum in Paris with some superb pieces is the Musee Jacquemart-Andre (sp?), a home built by two skilled collectors to house their collections--so you see the art in specially tailored areas. Or in Rome, Galleria Doria Pamphilji (sp?)--a superb family collection housed in a part of their ancestral home. Just a thought...
