At that stage, that's all we were committed to. Any new proposals would be decided on by the member state governments, as applied to everything that has happened since and happens still. And we have, and still have, general elections to allow us to sling out governments that do things we don't like in Europe or anywhere else.

I'm struggling here, I dislike Yanis Varoufakis because he is a socialist with a multi-millionaire wife but as flanner points out what part of removing barriers did we Brits not understand?
I enjoy the whole discussion about what has maintained peace in Europe? When I came to the subject I assumed it was NATO but once I had done some research I have come to the conclusion that the answer is not either EU or NATO. I think the answer is NATO AND EU.
To me the election of any UKIP politician to Brussels has been a wasted vote and shows the shear ignorance of the general public, the pernicious influence of the Daily Mail and their ilk and the craven silence of our political leaders in other parties.
Still, having seen the wastrel Rees-Moog yesterday complaining that the Bank of England was degrading itself by giving technical answers (Carney did a great job BTW) I can see that the out campaign has lost the plot. I just suspect the British public will struggle to understand even that presentation due to their lack of education.

Yup. As was said at the time, the point of NATO was to keep the Russians out, the Americans in and the Germans down. But the point of the initial Coal and Steel Union was to reduce the potential for economic warfare between France and Germany in particular. Since then, of course, the whole process of intermingling economic activity and people has taken things a lot further.

The bad news, of course, is that we can't rely on the Brexiters to keep on lashing things up so ineptly. And this is the phoney war anyway.
Anything might happen once we get to Designation Day: the point when there's an official campaign, with an official front man - and the Brexit front can't possibly be as hopeless as Stuart Rose, who runs the Britain Stronger in Europe campaign (snappy title, eh?)
Nor can the EU itself go another 3 months without some major screw-up that'll arouse our collective inner Offshore Islanders.
