If Tangiers is the PITS then Where??

If Tangiers is the armpit of Morrocco then where should one go for 2 to 3 day side trip from Costa del Sol? Are there any luxury beach resorts? Are there regular flights from Malaga? If so to where? Is it safe to travel in Morroco?

Personally, I would not travel to a Muslim country at the present time. I visited Morocco several years ago and don't intend a repeat trip.
Day trips from Costa del Sol:
1. Granada
2. Ronda
3. Gibraltar
2 - 3 Day side trip:
1. Granada
2. Seville
3. Cordoba
There is a lot to do in southern Spain.
Im not sure what you want to know about luxury beach resorts but Marbella has luxury accomodation, as does Nerja.

My mother and sister just returned from a trip to Morocco. They visited Casablanca, Marrakech, Fez, Volubius (sp?), but skipped Tangiers because it is not representative of Morocco. They found the Moroccan people to be incredibly warm and friendly. They did not experience any anti-American sentiment. My mother is 64 and would go back in a heartbeat. I had never planned to visit, but they have been raving about it that I have put it on my list.

Sorry, I can't help you with Spain.

Based on recent events, Carolina, I totally understand your hesitation. I wouldn't either. duke, you do realized that Marbella have some of the most luxurious beach resorts in Europe? For a 2-3 day side trip, I recommend Seville.

Morocco is a fascinating destination and I wouldn't personally hesitate to go there, but not to Tangiers. If you can make it to Marrakech or Fez, go. You could do some justice to either place in 3 days. Morocco, by the way, is predominantly Berber, I believe, though there are certainly many Muslims. The people are very friendly and welcoming. If you want to read my report on Marrakech from November 2001, it's on the SlowTrav site and will give you some idea of the flavor of the place.

NOTE I don't much care for "interzone (tangiers)

being Muslim isn't an ethnicity and Berber isn't a religion, say what you mean -- many Berbers are Muslim, whether they were in the fifth century or not, the country is 99 pct Muslim as it is a religious state that establishes Islam as the official religion

morocco is a wonderful mysterious place. Tanger ( which is the moroccan name ) is not . It is the equal of say tijauna in mexico, yes it is mexico but as a border town. Morocco is a muslim country, the late king hassan claimed to be a direct decendant of the Phorophet mohammed as does the suadi royal family.
Morocco is also a very liberal country. They except all religions and all view points and have a very european feel as it was controled by france and spain until 1957. The only thing that is not allowed in morocco is to directly insult the king. you can soeak against the government but not the king specifically.
Morocco has a diverse population and the southern city of Agadir houses many italin resorts by valtur and also a club med. There are topless beaches, discos and casinos..Luxury resorts and then off to the souks and atlas mountains for traditional moroccan life. I would not miss morocco just for tanger as it is a bit rough. But people tend to forget Tanger was ome to Malcolm Forbes 75th birthday party, some of the richest people in the world have homes ther and one of the greatest Arnold Palmer golf courses in the worls. U2 stays there all the time and recorded the video for Mysterious Ways there.
If you do stay in Tanger stay at he Sol Azul hotel it is one of f=the few that is across form the beach, it is where malcolm put his guests and still has his hot air balloon in the lobby. Good travel and enjoy the mystery of morocco

You are so brainwashed, American anti muslim propaganda is really working, did you know that Saddam is against fundamentalism and does not allow any religious authorities to occupy political positions? Saddam Husseins number 2 is a Christian, yes Trek Aziz is Catholic. I travel to Morocco every year and have never ever had any problems, the people are friendly and don't give a damn in what God you believe in! Give us a break! Morocco has a very large Jewish community and live peacefully with the Muslims

I did exactly what you wanted to do -- a day trip from Costa del Sol to Morocco and I should have just spent another day in southern Spain.

There are no problems with the people because they are Muslims. Its just that that city is a poor port town and not representative of Morocco. You'll be better served by taking a separate vacation to Morocco to see the real country.

If these aren't already in your itenary do:
Granada
Seville
Cordoba
or there is a great lake north of Malaga, can't remember the name, where the flamingoes go to nest and a nearby mountain covered in bizare rock features. Both are great fun and amazing.

We just drove the back roads of Andalucia for a week and found all kinds of little treasures.
