Orvieto would seem to be a good base for you for a couple of days. So two or three nites there.>
Yes Orvieto is fantastic - classic hill town or in its case volcano town - built on a lava plug - some say a house of cards and the tunnels hewn out below it over the ages for various reasons make a neat tour of subterranean Orvieto - and yes Montepulciano and other smaller hill towns are an easy bus ride away - great base and sweet town too. Good rail service on former mainline Rome to Florence.

Wow ... thanks ... a lot to ponder over the next months ... you guys have so many ideas, and each of us 3 has so many ideas.
Re driving and a car: I certainly agree, using trains and buses makes the most sense most places. The only place where I was considering driving is some of the countryside of Tuscany or Umbria ... and if we did would probably rent in some place like Orvieto or Siena ... definitely not in Florence.
If one spent a few days in Siena is it possible to use buses (as in local buses, not tour buses) to get to some of the hill towns in the morning and back later in the day?
Once we have our basic itinerary worked out I'll be back asking questions about places to stay.
We had been thinking about April/May 2016, but am starting to coalesce on Sept 2016, so we have lots of time to ponder and get confused. If in Sept.2016 would May 2016 be a good time to make reservations?

Yes very easy - frequent buses to places like San Gimignano and its famous towers, Montepulciano to the south and many more. Buses are dirt cheap too.
