Ideal 'Welcome to Rome' Walking Tour
I used to insist on a "free walking tour" whenever we landed in a new country/city, initially to stave off jet lag effects, but also to get our bearings and hear from a local guide what they thought was most important/fascinating, beyond just the major sites. So many of them have been fantastic! In contemplating this for our trip to Rome next month, I've become acutely aware that it's not really what I want this time. (It's not my husband's or my first trip to Rome, but it will be for one of our college-age sons.)
We already have our tickets for the Colosseum underground tour (via The Ultimate Italy), as well as a special experience at the Vatican (via The Roman Guy), so there's no need to do a "cover it all as fast as possible on foot" tour. We really want to spend some time with a knowledgable guide who will take us to the Pantheon, Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona, at a minimum, and maybe some of the other sites. The objective is to walk with an expert in the afternoon when we arrive - either a group tour or something more personal for our family.
I've looked at the "free" tour from Walkative, as well as considered two more expensive versions: Walks of Italy (looks comprehensive and awesome) and Context Travel (led by historians). I'm sure there are other good ones - hoping we find a good one for Tuesday, May 5, 2026.
Do you have any recommendations for the best (and maybe even not super expensive) tours that offer a great intro to Rome and will keep us walking, learning and interested for 2-3 hours? Thanks!
