What kinds of questions do you have about your itinerary? After your research in travel books such as Fodors, Rick Steves, etc., what cities hold the most interest for you?

I will throw in that I just got back from Europe and also flew home from Amsterdam - and I just did not take to the city (my first time there), for whatever reason. I had four days there, and quite honestly I would have been fine with just two, even only a single day there would have been enough - but by the end of my trip I was weary, and I have little interest in museums. I wish I'd taken two of those days in Amsterdam and spent them somewhere else, in Belgium or even an extra two days in Paris.

Andrew
Interesting trip. I agree with Andrew that you might be devoting too much time to Amsterdam. Especially since it is at the end of the trip.
I'd suggest increasing the time in Venice, allowing for a day trip to Florence and another to Padua.
Have a good trip.

Is this a first trip to Europe? It's a curious collection of dots on a map, separated by considerable distances. Will you travel some of these distances by air? or by ground?

It's way too much time spent in transit to suit my tastes, and skips over tons of good destinations in between the leapfrog moves.

Nothing wrong with a peripatetic collection of destination countries, but I would go about differently, and probably remove Rome.

Fly from London to Amsterdam, then train from there to Switzerland. Rent a car there and make a loop that circles through northern Italy and returns to Switzerland to fly back home.

Or, if you insist on traveling to Rome, travel by ground onward from Switzerland to Italy, and fly home from Rome.

This will cut your hours and cost of INTRA-Europe travel in half.

Best wishes,

Rex
I'm wondering how you will get from place to place. Hopefully you are flying from London to Rome. I think you can easily dedicate the time you have allotted to each of the cities (everyone here will argue for their favorites and you could never make a decision based on consensus).

Personally, I like that you are spending as much time as you are in each city. 3 nights in Venice really only means two full days (since the distance to Rome and Lucerne are pretty significant). Two full days is not at all too many!

As for Amsterdam, I truly love the city. Stay somewhere outside of the Centraal Station/Dam area. It's worth a visit but not part of what you will find to be the beauty of Amsterdam. My suggestion is the Museumplein, perhaps the Jan Luyken Hotel, or the Leidsplein if you want more bustle. I like Hotel American. Be sure to go to the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh, the Ann Frank House, a canal boat tour, Vondelpark.... plenty to keep you busy and more than enough great places to eat for 4 nights!

Cannot imagine four days in Amsterdam. However if you go...do not miss the "Nightwatch" in the Rijksmuseum. It is worth the trip to amsterdam all by itself. It and the Van Gogh museum are the highlights, IMHO, of a place that I can't imagine visiting again.

US
