if you know what that is . . the site is driveway and they allow you to lease the car.
car hire looks like $500 a week and then I am not sure how much a train from Perpignan to barcelona is going to be but I can't see how it will get to that figure.

The problem with point tp point rental is the steep drop-off charges incurred for renting in one country and dropping off in another.
Sounds as if the lease would avoid these extra charges so that's an advantage. Just check all the t's and c's so no surprises.

"All the people" is two adults and two small children. Plus they should be packing light for the train trips, which means they don't need so much luggage space.
Yhere's no way I'd want to drive a vehicle that size in Europe - unless you're only driving on motorways and parking outside of towns. If you're driving to Sarlat I suspect that won't be the case. YMMV

Did you do any shopping at all for this car? You can lease a large station wagon or van from the Renault Eurodrive program, for 3 weeks, all costs included, for US$1800.
I've been leasing cars in Europe for several decades and never heard of Driveway. Is it an Aussie outfit?

drive away is an aussie company . .interesting about the price difference.
The ferry is booked but we can add a car and pay for that once we know what it is as the charge goes on what it is etc.
I haven't sorted cases yet but we will do our best to travel as light as possible. I am a bit of a shopaholic so I have no worries no packing much and then buying outfits over there
We are going to a car yard today to check the cars out in case we can go smaller. We are basically getting the same sized car that we have over here . .since we know that fits our bits in pieces.
I don't think we plan on driving it actually in the towns. It's more of getting us from a to b then parking . . .
so if we hire our car from Brive and drop off in Perpignan that will be around $600 then the train to Barcelona I can't get yet but I assume for 4 seats that will be $150 roughly? The if we pick up another car in Lucca and then drop it off in Milan will be another $600 ish. So I think this will be better then leasing. Hubby just thinks for ease a lease would be better. Always choices to be made! Thanks everyone!

Claire, have you looked at AutoEurope that many of us LAUD.
I do realize you are young--but you have also indicated you have travelled before.
WHY do you need this huge car--it costs a lot of money, you aren't going across the OUTBACK, you have small children.
AND once again for the luggage.
You can ship things home --or buy things to put things in. PLEASE plan to pack in a 22" (expandable to 24") piece of luggage. DO IT.

school holidays cath! He can finally have a look at what has been sorted! Good advice about using a station wagon! We will do that! I actually want a golf since it has park assist hubby doesn't think it will fit our luggage.
I have heard about what you have said re luggage . .mum is taking a hand luggage size for her stuff and a small bag for the plane. I am going to sort myself and the kids out sooninsh and hubby will have a large case with four wheels.

OMG!!! LIGHT,LIGHT,LIGHT..How many times do we say, yell, encourage, insist, caution this bit on information. You probably should have a leash to anchor the kids while trying to get you and your stuff on board the train. You will have a 4yr old,(needing lifting) a 2yr old (needing lifting and being held in place). accompaning bags( needing lifting), possibly an umbrella stroller, 2 hands (only) very little patience and the beginning of a huge headache!! Can hubby possibly meet you pre train, post airport??? Even if you had to stay an extra night after farewell to mom. think about it!!!
