hut to hut hiking in Switzerland

My husband and I are trying to plan a hiking trip/hut to hut in Bernese Oberland area. I am having a hard time finding routes without asking for the assistance of a company to set it up for us. Don't get me wrong, the companies do an amazing job of choosing mountain huts but $28000 a person for 5 days is a bit steep. Looking to start in Grindelwald and end in Zermatt and can't seem to find maps like we would in the States.

Do you mean somethng like that:

HIKE MUERREN-ZERMATT

There is a good (partly strenous) hiking trail from Muerren/Gimmelwald to Zermatt
Muerren - Rotstock Hut rotstockhuette: Mürren-Griesalp - Sefinenfurgge - Gspaltenhorn Hut http://www.gspaltenhornhuette.ch/index.php?lang=en - Bundalp http://www.bundalp.ch/ - Bluemlisalp Hut http://www.bluemlisalphuette.com/ - Lake Oeschinen chair lift - Kandersteg http://www.kandertal.travel/en/erlebnisse/hiking/routen - Sunnbuehl cableway - Schwarenbach http://www.schwarenbach.ch/en.html - Gemmi Pass http://www.gemmi.ch/en/ - Leukerbad Leukerbad 365 - Home - Torrentalp cableway http://www.restaurant-briand.ch/68/English.html - Guttet (small mountain hotel http://www.seniorenoase.ch/) - Erschmatt - Bratsch - Gampel http://www.weibil.ch/feriae/schlafu/bnb/ - Eischoll cableway - Unterbaech cableway - Buerchen http://www.buerchen-unterbaech.ch/infos/ferienorte - Moosalp bus stop https://plus.google.com/photos/11606...49969873589313 - Schalb cableway - Embd cableway http://www.embd.ch/wandern.html - Kalpetran railway station - Graechen http://www.graechen.ch/sites/index.p.../mountain-huts - Gasenried bus stop http://www.riederstuebli.ch/images/docu0002.jpg - Europa Hut http://www.zermatt.ch/en/page.cfm/yo...ountain_cabins - Taeschalp http://www.zermatt.ch/en/page.cfm/yo...ountain_cabins - Sunnegga cablecar http://www.myswitzerland.com/en/rest...gga-2288m.html - ZermattThe direct trail between Gasenried and Europahuette will probably remain interrupted because of serious earth slides due to the greenhouse effect (smelting permafrost). One has therefore to make the detour via the villages of Herbriggen and Randa, both with hotels bookable via www.bookng.com.

Try googling. Wandern ohne Gepaeck die Schweiz.
This is a very decently priced option where B&B's or small hotels are booked. After breakfast each morning, the landlord/company will convey your luggage to the next overnight stop on your hike.
Haven't tried Switzerland, but they have a Berner Oberland option. Is well established in Germany.
Wandern ohne Gepaeck translates to hiking without luggage, all you need is your daypack!

Taking a GPS phone? Wonder if they can get signals on such a route.

Here in Europe we can go to a bookstore and buy the Swiss hiking maps - I prefer the Kümmerly & Frey hiking maps, but the official Swisstopo maps (Landeskarte der Schweiz - Wanderkarte) are also excellent. Have a look at https://www.swisstravelcenter.ch/kf_wanderkarten.html and select "EN" for language. You will need No. 18 (Jungfrau region) and 24 (Saas Fee-Zermatt) and, depending on your route, most likely No. 32 (Crans-Montana) to cover the region inbetween. No idea if they ship to the U.S., but think so. Or check an American online shop.

MAPS OF SWITZERLAND
By far the best map is that mentioned bi Ingo:
scale from 1:2million up to 1:5000
all hiking trails marked in yellow (extremely easy), red (normal) and blue (difficult)
all train, bus, gondola, funicular and mountain railway stops with timetables
and of course all isolated mountain hotels and all mountain huts.
All maps at any scale can be printed for free

I suggest you get a copy of Kev Reynolds book "The Bernese Alps: A Walker's Guide"
http://www.amazon.com/bernese-alps-w.../dp/1852844515 http://www.amazon.com/bernese-alps-w.../dp/1852844515
. It contains all the information you will need for hiking in the Lauterbrunnental area. Reynolds also has several other books specific to hut-to-hut treks.
https://www.amazon.com/100-Hut-Walks-Alps https://www.amazon.com/100-Hut-Walks-Alps
Detailed maps are available from Schweizer Wanderwege. Maps #254T and #264T cover the whole area on both sides of the valley. http://www.swisstopo.admin.ch/intern...hiking_50.html
