There is the Central Synagogue and the Jewish Museum right next to each other. In the courtyard is a Holocaust memorial tree -- with leave representing those exterminated by the Nazis. It's in the central district of Pest .. not that far from St. Stephens.

Here's a little more information:
http://www.globewalker.com/Budapest/sights/museums.htm [the blurb on the museum says that 550,000 Hungarians died at the hands of the Nazis.]
The central synagog has been recently renewed, one of the biggest ones in Europe.(One of the sponsors was Tony Curtis,of Hungarian origin). There is a statue of Raul Wallenberg, a Swedish businessman who saved thousands of Jews giving them swedish passports, and who was captured by the Russians in January 1945 ,and probably killed later in Moscow.
Some 400-450 thousand Hungarian Jews were killed mostly in Auschwitz,by the Nazis with the full support of the Hungarian government and police
