Don't know about overnight stop but you can do it overnight quite easily - http://www.seat61.com/Italy.htm#Venice

There is also the money-no-object choice: the Orient Express.

Hi WL - Are you planning to take the Milan/Geneva route or the Turin/Lyon route?

If the first, you could stop off on Lake Geneva - e.g Montreux, Lausanne ...

If the second, I'd recommend Annecy for your overnight stop (- a slight detour - but definitely worth it )

Hope this helps ...

We did this trip and stayed two nights in Montreaux, which was a lovely place to stop.

We want to do that trip in reverse. We were thinking of taking Ira's suggestion, but does anyone know how long the train trip takes? Tossing up between saving time or enjoying the scenery. Thanks.

We are going to take the train from Venice to Paris in late October. A good part of the reason for choosing the train over air (in addition to the strict baggage weight limits on Ryan Air) is that we want to see the countryside along the way. So far, I have found a train that leaves very early in the morning, routes through Milan, and arrives in Paris in late afternoon. The entire trip is about 10 hours. We will be staying in Venice very close to S Lucia station, so the early departure (about 5 a.m.) should work for us. If anyone has a better idea or suggestions, I'd love to hear it.

Hmmm... the one time I did this route, we went by overnight train in a private sleeper cabin (Venice-Milan-Paris) which worked out perfectly for us.

We did this trip a few years ago. Stayed at a hotel just a hop and a skip from the Venice train station, and left at about 6 a.m. Went straight through to Paris and arrived mid-afternoon.

The time you travel depends on what you want. If you want to see countryside, then this early departure gives you daylight hours to see Italy, Switzerland, and France along the way. If you'd rather do other things with your daylight hours, then travel overnight.

If you just want to get from point A to point B take the EuroNight and sleep on the train.

Otherwise stop over somewhere in Switzerland. The Milan to Zurich route is scenic.

We have done this trip and I'd highly recommend it. We left Gare de Lyon in paris at about 8 a.m. on the TGV to milan. Arrived about 2 P.M. A great trip through the mountains. We left milan about 3 p.m. and arrived in Venice about 7 p.m. The scenery was great and talked to lots of interesting people, travellers and locals on the train. It was along day
but we enjoyed every minute of it. I would do it again. It would faster to fly,but would not be near the experience.
