Thanks, Traveler_Nick,
I've seen various camera hoods and stuff, but I really like the look of that one. Thanks
Ted

I'm glad you found a solution that might work for you, and I apologize for the sarcasm.

Well the famous Catacombs just south of Rome would seem fit for a rainy day!

Thank you all for some good ideas.

I should have asked the question differently. I've been to Rome a few times already. I've been to many of the museums and other attractions, but this time I want some off-beat ideas.

Though the Borghese and Etruscan museums aren't off-beat, I did need a reminder. I've now got a ticket to Borghese. Thank you, WillTravel and bilboburgler.

Borghese would have been my suggestion, but also -- window-side cafe table to people watch, a favorite pastime.

If you are due for a haircut or other, one of my favorite things to do when traveling is visit a hair salon for a wash and blow-dry; definitely local color and usually way less pricey than back home.

I agree with annw. Don't know how "off beat" it is but a hair salon, massage, or manicure or pedicure gets you into the local scene and out of the rain. Or go to the movies.

I recommend walking through basilicas. For example Santa Maria Maggiore.
Or travel to neighboring cities from Termini station. Very beautiful place Orivietto. It takes about an hour, and if I remember correctly, a ticket costs about 12 euros. You can also take a bus to Trasteveri and dine at one of the restaurants. Look for less tourists. Metro does not advise, the nearest station will be the Vatican, and this is far away if we are talking about rainy weather.
