The only thing that beginners need to remember is that the <i>Carte Paris Visite</i> is <u>always</u> more expensive than anything else. And the difference is Euros <i>far</i> more often than cents.
You don't have to "search out" where to get a better deal. About five minutes of effort before you leave home will reveal that the best price anywhere is at the Métro window. If knowing that saved you $50, would you take your wad of funny money to the window?
It should be pointed out that the only products mentioned on the RATP English language site are the <i>carnet</i> and <i>Paris Visite</i>.

Simply not true, but since you seem to have decided that any factual example contrary to your opinion is "contrived" and "smacks marginally of reductio ad absurdum," I'll leave it at that.
