How to get to the Eilean Donan Castle by train

I am going to be in Edinburgh in May for 6 nights. I really want to see the Eilean Donan Castle, but I'll have no car while I am there. Due to hotel concerns I'll have to travel from Edinburgh. What is the best way to get to the castle traveling by train. I was tempted on taking a tour, but timing concerns won't let me. Thank you in advance. Melisa

You really can't - not easily anyway. You can take the train to Inverness and then another train to Kyle of Lochalsh and then a taxi or bus to Eilean Donan. Or train to Mallaig, ferry to Skye, buses back over to the mainland.

So it will be a looooong journey.

Eilean Donan really isn't much BTW - it is at most a 10 minute photo op (a lovely photo op but that is all). The inside of the castle is nothing to write home about.

So I don't think you would find this trek to be worthwhile.

maybe go to Stirling instead.
That would be much easier to get to, there is a beautiful castle to tour - plus a sizable town with things to do, places to see....

Eilean Donan is a fantastic photo op, but there really is NOTHING around it!
