Once you figured out the best route there is one more thing to consider. A Fodors' poster posted some time ago that at one of the stations (can't remember which one) you need to walk through the cars towards the front as the train was too long for the station and the cars in the back remained in a tunnel. This turned out to be very useful information for us.

This thread is a bit dated so there are other trains now. Thello operates Marseilles/Nice/Genoa/Milan. Three runs per day starting mid April (currently only 1 run per day). They are running a 15€ special and the train will be nicer than any regional or IC on this route.

I don't think there are any unreserved seats on IC trains. Where did you see that? They used to be "reservation optional", but that was years ago.

At least the reservations on IC trains cost less than those in Freccia trains, €3 instead of €10. I would probably just get a regional train to avoid the reservation issue. If you really want an IC train, you'd have to buy the reservations at Ventimiglia.
