ash318,
For a lengthy (more lengthy, perhaps, than you want!!) discussion on how to book/wine/dine/lodge for El Bulli (but not for '08, reservations taken and tables filled mid- Oct.), read the El Bulli threads on the Spain/Portugal forum of www.egullet.org.
Put El Bulli in the search box of Egullet and you can read for days!!

You are right, no one had any scoops on snagging a table. If it were me and I lived in Spain and had the time I would just make the trip to Roses and book a hotel for a few nights and turn up at the restaurant early every evening.....
If you don't get in, Rafa's nearby is famous for seafood. From what I have read, that place is also worth the trip..

Hire a yacht, sail straight into the rocks off the coast just down the road and then stumble into the restaurant claiming that you have just crossed the Atlantic single handed in a sinking yacht and that you food ran out after 2 days due to an Albatross eating everything off Trinidad.
If they don't give you a table and feed you they should be shut down and labelled heartless bastards!

ekscrunchy,
Nope, unfortunately I haven't been-hubby not interested! I have been to the El Bulli Hacienda Benazuza (my consolation prize) outside of Sevilla, and I'd go back in a flash. Very elegant and just gorgeous hacienda.
ash318,
If you can get down to Sanlúcar la Mayor before April, El Bulli H.B. could be your consolation prize too-granted, not an identical experience by any stretch of the imagination, but El Bulli inspired dishes.
markrosy,
Very gustsy ploy of yours! Sorry it did't work!

Your only hope is to call every day for cancellations.
FWIW, I sent in a request for reservations during October, asking for ANY Friday or Saturday, as well as several other days for all of 2008 and was given the big goose egg.

I ate at El Bulli a couple of years ago, but only after calling while in Barcelona and inquiring about cancellations/availability. Frankly, I'm not sure I'd visit if I had to plan that far in advance. I live in NY and I don't think I'd fly over just to eat there -- it was a novelty, like the Fat Duck, and I'm not longing to repeat the visits to either of them. Do people really plan a vacation and overseas trip around a dinner?

I would plan an overseas trip around a series of dinners, ie go to a place with food that I consider interesting. But to eat ONE meal at a restaurant..no..at least I don't think so! Actually I can think of only a couple of places that I have traveled in recent years that did not have food that I consider very good.
Of course I did not visit, what was it, TC, Kysgystan...??

ekscrunchy, you have a good memory, but it was all five Central Asian 'Stans this May -- from Kazakh, through Kyrgyz, to Uzbeki, with a sidetrip into Tajiki and ending in Turkmenistan.
And, the food was surprisingly good -- a lot of grilled lamb and beef. But, it was the fruit and vegetables in Central Asia that were outstanding. I had a cucumber and tomato salad in Turkmenistan, and honestly, I have never had tomatoes that good -- maybe its the lack of hyrbrids and pesticides, but the fruit and vegetables were like candy (you could eat them all day).
I also went to the same restaurant in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (recommended in Lonely Planet) for lunch and dinner on the same day -- great lamb chops and mashed potatoes (plus I didn't see a very appealing "second best" restaurant).
