How to best spend 1 day in Valletta

Hi, we are visiting Valletta as part of a Mediterranean cruise and will have from 1pm until 10 pm in port. We are wondering how to best spend our time there? With a limited amount of time would it be possible to see the Grand Master's Palace and St. John's Cathedral and perhaps spend some time walking the "Old Town"? Has anyone done the hop on hop off bus in Valletta? Any feedback on this? Is there anything else that you would consider a must see for a one day visit? Appreciate the help. Thank you.

we also stopped their as part of a cruise. Easy to get around and you will have plenty of time. Top site we went to was Hal Saflieni Hypogeum--need reservations as only a few people are allowed in at a time. I wrote a report on tripadvisor.com. Your difficulty might be that site probably close around 5-6 so need to plan to see the sites from 1-6 and then eat, stroll, etc after that.

Thanks jan47ete. Did you take a bus to get there? It looks very interesting.

I spent about 10 days on Malta in December, stayed in 3 places including Valletta. Leave some time for just strolling in the city and along the way the place I'd recommend most is the Casa Rocca Piccola, a beautiful house stilled occupied by the titled family. And if you're lucky, as I was, you'll meet the baron/marquis and his English lady who took over our tour (there were just 2 of us) from the guide. I loved seeing some of those beautiful Maltese enclosed balconies from the inside. http://www.casaroccapiccola.com/
