How to Arrive in Malta...
Can you please advise the most economical way to fly from the U.S. to Malta??? Should we take a flight to Rome or where? Can we get to Malta by ferry or would you take a hopper flight?

Also, after spending a week on Malta we plan to head to Barcelona, Spain...Any advice on taking a ferry, or should we fly? We weren't sure about the time involved with ferry service but thought it might be interesting...

Thanks for your input!

I would guess you could get a good deal to Rome, then get to Sicily and ferry over--just a few hours. We flew from Tunisia, because we wanted to visit there, and then we flew via London, where we stayed over, back to NY. If you have to stopover, make the most of it--I know many planes stopover in other great European cities. Why not choose an airline that flies to Malta via Spain?

A few years ago we were staying in Sicily for a week and then were going to Malta for a week. The ferry from Sicily to Malta was a difficult deal --involving an extra night near it, losing the better part of a day, etc. Instead we ended up flying Air Malta from Palermo to Valetta, and later flying from Valetta to Zurich (where we were spending more time). It was a very inexpensive ticket. If you can't get an add on to your main fare getting to Malta. I'd check the Air Malta website and see what major cities you can fly from in Europe. Then fly from Rome, Zurich, or wherever you can get a good airline rate. Putting Sicily in the mix is just a complication, unless you plan to spend some time on that wonderful island too.

I recently booked a trip to Malta for March, 2001. I found that the cheapest way to get there for me (and I am flying out of Toronto)was to fly to Malta via London. London is a fairly major hub for trips to Malta. I can make one other recommendation, however, I booked my trip through a travel agency in Toronto that specializes in trips to Malta (Toronto has a fairly large Maltese community, of which I am a member), maybe they can help you. They are Melita Travel, and they can be reached at: 416-767-6312. Maybe they can at least point you in the right direction.
