How safe is Bayswater, London?

I am going to London next month with my family and we'll be staying at a hostel in the Bayswater area. I was re-reading some Fodors info from 2 years ago (yes, I still have the printouts!) and one says "avoid Bayswater". Maybe it's the impression of one single person, but could you please let me know how safe/unsafe it is to be there, dangerous, what? Thank you very much for your help,
Glaucia Arruda

Glaucia: I have stayed in Bayswater twice. I stayed on Lancaster Gate at the Park Court in 1996 and right around the corner at the Elyssee in 1997. I never felt the least bit unsafe!

Hello, I've stayed in the Lancaster Gate area twice. Once in June 1999 and the second time in January 2000 and felt very safe both times. Bayswater is an area with alot of hotels filled with tourists, so there are always people walking around. Just practice common sense safety and you should be fine.
Hope this helps.
