How much time should I allot to visit Pompeii?

I realize that it is a "personal choice" (i.e. one could probably spend an hour or all day, but for those of you who have done the tour, how much time should we allocate ? Thanks a lot

Based on my two visits, I'd think three hours should be fine. It depends on how in-depth you want to get... on a nice day, it's a very cool place to wander around. A veritable ghost town. Oh, and please pet the Pompeii dogs for me. They're everywhere, and ever so friendly.

Hi! Pompeii is a great place. We stopped for a tour of the ruins--probably took no more than 2-3 hours, and we felt we had seen what we came to see. The tour guide was wonderful, explained things in detail--no hurry during the tour itself. Took our pictures and left. I'm sure there must be more to see, but we never felt like we were missing out.

Enjoy, it is a fascinating piece of history!
Jean

You should spend at least three hours there, and hire a guide. (Incidentally, our guide told us that it would three days to see all of Pompeii in any depth! However, you can see a lot in three hours!)

Depends on how much of a museum person you are. We are - big time - so spent 5 1/2 blissful hours there.
We were in Italy with a tour but went on our own to Pompeii. Others in the group went with the tour & felt they were rushed with less than 2 hours.
I guess, for the non-fanatic, 2 - 3 hours should be satisfactory.
