I would rethink the car. You will be driving on the multi-lane highway and if you plan to do this in one day, you will not have loads of time to leave the highway and negotiate your way into other cities, look for parking, park the car, and sightsee. Have you driven in Italy before?
You are much better off having a car for a couple of days in rural Tuscany, but you scarcely have time for that.
Almost anyone on this forum will tell you the same thing.

Prater,
Another important thing about the car - you don't want one if you are staying IN Florence for 6 days. Driving in Florence is very difficult, expensive if you accidentally incur traffic tickets (which you won't know about until weeks later) and parking is costly too.
If your interests do include driving around the countryside do this:
Venice 3 nts
Florence 2 nts
Tuscan hilltown 4 nts
Rome 6 nts
Get your car at one of the smaller towns (Siena, Chiusi) depending on the day you leave Florence. Smaller town rental offices are usually closed part of Sat, all of Sunday. Or, get it in Florence. Return it to Orvieto and train into Rome. Lots of people use this strategy.
If you want to experience the Tuscan countryside, don't try to do it from Florence. Stay IN the countryside. You will have a much better experience.

The trip to Italy has apparently been cancelled.

we are still undecided. Still considering Italy but not sure if it is our best. I guess it depnds on how we would navigate the Italy trip. Proably train from Venice to Forence and rent a car for a dy from the airport to visit small towns near Florence. Many people have disuaded from driving from Venice to Florence an into Florence.
We are just really undecided as we have to rebook something since the Egypt trip was canceled.
We are justconcerned about our ROI rgading the USD opposed to the Euro. Been told thatwe would get more bang for the buck somewhere other than Europe.
