How much longer should I wait to purchase tickets to Italy for June 2007?

I have been waiting for a potential sale in Jan. or Feb. The flights I'm interested in have only gone up about $10 in the past few months. Because I have waited so long I'm prepared to wait even longer but want to know if anyone has advice on when the fares will begin to steadily climb.

I would just buy the tickets ASAP. May/June/July/August are pretty popular times to travel.

Some people say the cheapest fares are 4 1/2 months prior to departure but I think that's rubbish. I bought my tickets for Europe (including Rome) back in December and I noticed prices were already higher now.

I agree with pointofnoreturn. My husband got his tickets a few weeks ago and when I check yesterday, his same flights were about $250 more. Now, this is not to say that they won't be $250 LESS next week! It's a gamble.

Just wondering if you have purchased your Rome tickets yet? I am looking from Ohio and amazed at how pricey they are.

Fare sales are done completely at the airlines' whim, and when they do occur, they typically discount crappy routes, not popular ones to places like Italy.

I'd just book them now. The $10 increase you've already seen could be a $100 increase overnight. You can't see them coming.

jtwiss, We live in Pittsburgh, so we are probably looking at the same type of booking (wish I lived near a gateway city!). My husband paid $904 + $15 leaving 4/18 and returning 5/03. We booked directly with United as I didn't want to end up on Alitalia, etc. We might have gotten it a bit cheaper through a discount site, but I don't think it is worth it...

Celiaanne...904. doesn't sound too bad to me. I was seeing 1300. out of Dayton for June/July. I think I heard Delta has some good fares out of Cinn. but I have not seen them. Why didn't you want to fly Alitalia? I see their fares are better.

jtwiss, Yes, that's what we thought too. When I checked this weekend, the exact routing was something like $1125...

I flew Alitalia in September (2006) and while the flight itself was fine, you CANNOT count on having a seat assignment -- at least one that they honor.

I was told by fodorites this would happen, and it happened exactly as predicted on the way over -- "equipmnent change." On the way back (delayed flight), we were assured our seat assinments were valid. When we boarded, it was "open seating"! I got a window, of course.

Besides, I value the FF miles we get on United and US Airways.

Good luck!

Tammy - I bought my airline to Italy last May and I will be traveling this April. The price has gone up since then, not down. I would purchase them now.

I would buy as soon as possible to make sure you can get the flight and seats you'd like.

I've been checking what I want for June for a week or two, and it's scarey! I'm looking to go out of NYC to Brindisi, and 2 weeks later from Lamezia Terme to NYC. It's been in the $1400 range. I'm waiting.

I've been searching for June tickets since September and to be quite honest, they haven't fluctuated all that much!!! So, I continue to wait, checking every day, ready to book as soon as they drop somewhat! I'm looking for Bos to Venice, Naples to Boston and unless I want to make 2 stops each way, the price is around 1300-1400 pp. I keep checking seating though and right now, the planes are almost empty! So, I'm hoping a sale will occur soon, figuring the airlines will want to move some of those seats!

If you have a certain flight and airline you want, check the availability and if it's filling up, you may want to purchase soon. If not, then waiting a while longer may work!

1400-1600 seems rather steep to begin with for the most economical ticket to Rome. Maybe you were looking at more expensive seats to begin with. $695 seems more like the norm

No, these are the same tickets. Some other weekends are still selling for the higher fare.

No, Madison, $695 isn't the norm at all this summer -- fares have been hovering at over a $1000.

Thanks for posting TammyDe -- look how exhilerating it is and you're not even there yet!
