How much has Paris changed in 100 years?

Sometimes it seems that everything is changing in Paris, but I recently came across a set of postcards of my neighborhood, and I went about taking photos of exactly the same places 100 years later.

I was rather amazed at some of the results: http://tinyurl.com/ccdzh3

Your pictures are amazing! I like the comparison between the old and the new.

Where did you get/buy those old postcards?

I found the old photos on the internet. There are old postcards for almost every street in Paris. I suppose that back then, new Parisians would send cards back to their families in the villages and say "this is the street where I live" -- it didn't need to be scenic or anything. It was the big city!

How nice to have that comparison in print.

I wonder if it will look the same in another 100 years?

I think I still have some images to reproduce; I'll get back to it sooner or later.

Wow, amazing that you found the one with the view from your living room window!

This book also has photos like that: http://www.amazon.com/Paris-Then-Now/dp/1592231365

Kerouac as a lover of architect and cities I so enjoyed this thread of yours. Quite fascanating to compare the postcard pictures and your pictures.

I have quite a collection of old post cards from Italy (duplicates not the originals). I never thought to take photos of the same sites.

Thank you for sharing, I enjoyed your fashion street scene pictures also!

Lovely...thank you Kerouac. There is a Walker Evans show at the Met that displays the postcards he collected since he was a kid, way before he became a photographer. I haven't seen it yet, but the whole idea of then and now is fascinating to me. I have colleagues, friends and family send me postcards from their travels and it's one of the ways my third graders learn about the world. I'll share your then and now with them soon.

The photos are fabulous! I love that the one with the pharmacy is still a pharmacy 100 years on. In Sydney it would have been a dozen or more different shops in the space of 100 years. They are gorgeous Kerouac, I hope you find time to track down some more for us.

I am thrilled that you have shared these! It is a marvelous way to see Paris. I always buy old postcards when I go to Paris at the flea market and have concentrated mainly on the monuments and the Seine. These old photos and your recent are much more interesting! We were in the 14th at the beginning of the month and I wish I had sought out old postcards of the neighborhood. I look forward to all your Paris postings! Thank you!

Did you notice that in several cards that there was a pharmacy in the exact location in both or that there was a shoe store in the exact location? I wonder if those locations were operated by the same families 100 years apart.

your photos gave me goose bumps.
how fascinating to see some continuation and some of the changes in the areas.

recently a local photographer published a paperback with pictures of the city i live in.
the 100 year perspective - then and now is so cool to see.

Really interesting!!! And djsteach mentioned the Walker Evans postcard collection...it was featured this morning on CBS Sunday Morning Show (I believe he had over 9000 postcards). I can't wait to see more when you have time. Thank you for sharing.
