I need to change my list w/r/t upcoming trips. I have decided to postpone my trip to NZ until later in 2007 or 2008, and have added a trip to Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana for next August, which will give me one (Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname) World Heritage Site, and one likely site (Kaiteur Falls in Guyana).

The public is now invited to vote for the new 7 Wonders of the World, out of a field of 21, chosen by experts. So far, around 20 million people around the world have voted!
If you want to vote, go to the UNESCO link: www.n7w.com. The results will be announced in Lisbon, Portugal on July 7 '07.
For the record, I have been to most of the 21 "candidates" and it was really tough for me, the 6th and 7th choices, but....below are my picks:
In order of importance (to me):
1. Pyramids
2. Colisseum
3. Petra
4. Acropolis
5. Taj Mahal
6. Chichen Itza
7. Eiffel Tower
Note I chose Chichen Itza over Angkor Wat, both built around the same time period-but Angkor Wat never did a thing for me, whereas Chichen Itza I thought to be quite magnificent and thrilling.

Chichen Itza, Mexico
Spain - Alhambra, Cordoba and Toldeo

Clifton, you can find out about the nomination process on the unesco site.
"Only countries that have signed the World Heritage Convention, pledging to protect their natural and cultural heritage, can submit nomination proposals for properties on their territory to be considered for inclusion in UNESCO’s World Heritage List."
My favourite is the Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump in Alberta, Canada. And yes, staff answer the phone, "Head Smashed In, Can I help you?"

I have added four more recently:
Taos Pueblo in New Mexico (October)
Sintra (last week)
Tomar (last week)
Mosteiros dos Jeronimos, Lisbon (last week)
I took my Mom to Italy in May and am heading back again next month, I will have to check if any new places in May (or new places next month) will add to my list...
