Jen, I suggest at least 5 days in each city. I have been to Florence 3 times at a total of 22 days and I still didn't see everything. And Rome is even bigger. There are those who will tell you you only need 2 days, but these people are tourists who only want to buy a leather jacket, eat a gelato, and walk across the Ponte Vecchio or see the Vatican, then go straight home. I hope you are NOT one of these. Ciao, John G.

How many days do you have? If it's less than 10 I would do a couple more days in Rome than FLorence, especially if you've never been to Italy. If you can do 5 and 5 in each, you can probably do a day trip or 2 to a smaller town as well. If you are true lover of art and art museums, you may need more time in FLorence than Rome. Whatever you should decide, you will have no problem keeping busy.

Just went a few months ago. I would recommend four for Florence, three minimum, without daytrips. If you just want to see the major tourist sights, then a rushed two days would suffice. As for Rome, I felt five was adequate to do and see enough to satisfy me for a first trip. Four would be enough for many people, but three or less would be quite rushed. Ideally, I would spend 7 in each, with a couple of days for daytrips from Florence, but most of us can't find the time to do it that way.
