How many bottles of wine?

If the answer is the United States, it depends a great deal on the state. You owe taxes just driving across a state line from a neighboring state with a bottle of wine, in many states.

Practically speaking, many travelers from Europe bring home as much wine as they can reasonably transport in their luggage (say, 12-24 bottles) without any tax, penalty or interference from law enforcement oficials.

Best wishes,

Rex

While I would agree in theory that Rex is right, we are subject (assuming you are coming "back" to the states, to a $400 duty free limit. Depending on the quality of wine you are bringing back and how many other items you purchase, you could exceed that with 24 bottles. Just a thought to keep in mind that if customs checks your baggage and you do exceed the free amount, you may have to pay whatever the duty is.
