How long to transfer between terminals in Heathrow?

I'm arriving on a United Airlines flight from SFO-London Heathrow which I believe is in Terminal 3. We have to catch a British Midlands flight in Terminal 1 - how long does it take to get between terminals (picking up baggage and going through security/customs)?

Also, is there a shuttle that takes people from one terminal to the next? And if so, does it only come every half hour or so?

hi

There is a bus shuttle service.
T1, T2 and T3 are fairly close and you can walk it if you don't have too much luggage. There are some subways, but I can't remember which terminals are linked.

Peter

T4 is further away.
You shouldn't have to pick up your baggage. I often fly United from the US and catch a British Midland flight at Heathrow, and I've never had to pick up my luggage--it's always checked through.

However, it still takes forever to transfer at Heathrow. The fastest I've ever done it is 30 minutes, and that was running through the airport at stop speed, and getting sent to the front of the security line by an airline agent.
