How long is the train ride from Rome to Naples

How long is the train ride from Rome to Naples, also what airlines other than Alitalia fly between Rome & Naples, and is there any time saved flying? How long is it by car from Rome to Naples. Would it be easier to hire a car service? Thanks

The eurostar from Rome to naples takes about a couple of hours and I find it the best way to connect between the 2 cities. The plane takes about 3/4 of an hour, but you must count the check-in time and the time it takes to reach the airports. With the car, if you take the ROma-Napoli highway it takes about 2-3 hours, there are about 200km between the 2 cities, but the traffic in Naples is terrible in my opinion.

The schedules for Alitalia between Rome and Naples are set to work with Alitalia flights. If you fly in from another country on another airline, it is hard to get a good connection. Another reason I don't fly Rome to Naples is because they fly props, not jets. I agree it takes about 2 hours, by train, very easy. I have done it several times. If you are going into Rome from US, you may be able to fly directly into Naples on Air France. I recently got some flights from London directly to Naples on BA, they were having a great special from the US-Gatwick-Naples, but the special is over. I think Air France has some equally good deals now. You can also hire a car service. I use [email protected]. They are family run and I use them every time I go to the Amalfi Coast. They will pick you up in Rome, but it is around 400 Euro I think. I hope this helps. WT

Hi Diane,

Train schedules and fares for Italy are at www.trenitalia.com.

Although there are IC trains that are scheduled to take the same time between cities, the ES* is more reliable.

Thanks for all of the information. I think we will hire a car to drive us to Naples. Since it is our first trip, and we will be traveling from New York I think we will be tired and would feel more comfortable having a car meet us at the airport. How long is the car ride?

Hi Diane

Car is 2-3 hr and costs about 400E. We used Renato Cuomo
www.cuomonet.it [email protected] between Naples and the Amalfi Coast and can recommend him. I believe that he can service you in Rome as well.

Hi DianeL,

I highly recommend Giovanni Gargiulo, who is based in Sorrento. I found him on the forum a few years ago, and we have used him for our trips from Rome-Naples-Amalfi Coast, most recently this July.

He can be reached via e-mail at: [email protected], or on his cell at:
3387306575.

He speaks excellent English, and is a reliable and safe driver.

Good luck with your trip!

It is a 2 hour train ride - very easy and comfortable to do. And yes, there are other airlines that fly between Rome and Naples -- Lufthansa Airlines is one of them. There is some time saved, but IMO, it is not worth the expense. The train is so convenient and direct - it is my preferred mode of travel.

I think the Eurostar is even faster; something like one hour, 45 minutes. Nice views of the sea as you get closer to Naples.

If you are going to Naples directly after arriving from NY flying may not be such a bad idea...you will be at the airport anyway.
