Among others http://www.iti.fr/ is a pretty good route planner. Check it out. For others, see
http://www.reiseroute.de/route_uk.htm

Ed

www.euroshell.com

And www.iti.fr is now www.mappy.com - - although typing the former will get you to the latter. And it has superior city maps (in many respects) to www.mapquest.com - - for my money.
I just discovered a mapping program on CNN.com/travel that gives directions, distance, travel time and a map of the route. It seems pretty good.
Adding to russ' recommendation for the Michelin site -- it also offers hotels along the route. After you get your route display, click on the little red-book icons by the towns along the route. You'll get an option to expand your search to nearby cities, then you'll get an option to list hotels by category: simple (one house), of good comfort (two houses), very comfortable (three), grand comfort (four), and grand luxury and tradition (five). Beware: this little trick will keep you busy for hours.

s
