I find staying in Nafplio much more exciting than stayinh somewhere else.
Have tried several hotels outside Nafplio, even in Tolo, nothing can beat the centre of Nafplio though.

Rostra, I would have been so spooked out if that had been me, lol. What an adventure though.

Clausar, thanks for the validation of the hotel choices so far. It gives me more confidence about the hotels I've booked because I only based my choices on on line reviews from different on line sources and sometimes I wonder the legitimacy of some of the reviews. Good to hear from someone who's actually stayed there. I booked 5 nights at the Marianna. The friendly Zotos brothers gave me a very good rate for 5 nights (I think). Quick question: which did you like more, the modern looking rooms or the cave-like ones with stone walls? Is there a particular room or floor or side of the hotel that I should request?

I am currently looking to book our hotels in Oia for our 3 nights in Santorini. Suggestions and recommendations are highly appreciated.

We had a nice room with a balcony overlooking the old town.
The balcony was tiny, but due to rainy and cold weather it didn't have any use at all.

I did like the cave rooms, but they were already booked, and i didn't have a chance to see them.

For the cold I thought I knew what I was getting into I had lived in Nea Makri (near Marathon) for 2yrs (73-75) but it was *really cold* that night.

One off-season advantage was Delphi, I stayed in-town for 2 nights so I was at the site when it opened.

It was cold, drizzly and in the clouds that day so whisps of fog shourded the ruins, the guards were all in their little shacks out of sight and no other tourists showed-up for at least 1.5hrs.

I was completely alone in the silence (deadened by the fog) and with the fog/clouds rolling in and out, it was surreal and one of my best memories of an archaeological site.

Mariana has many reviews, but u have to get the right room ... for some rooms there are MANY steps down ... Hotel Leto is equally high above city, all rooms have views and are on same level. Plus, it's a bit easier/faster to get down to main square (which is where all the action is in October), and back up... with Mariana, you may have to drive car down & back. But it's your call.

Traveljean, thank for the headsup. I will request the Zotos brothers for a cave room. I read in one of the reviews that there is parking at the top of Marianna, next to an empty hotel which would be the better spot to park. We will be renting a car so will drive to the old town if it proves to be too much of a hike for us. I did see the stairs in the reviews. As much as I am not so much of a "step master" type, I am willing to burn off a few of the extra calories I ingest during vacations when I usually indulge. But to your point, I will email Marianna to inquire about the location of the room I reserved.

We planned for 5 Nights ( which is actually 4 full days ) in Nafplio. Prior to arriving in Nafplio, we planned for 3 nights ( which is 2 full days ) in Santorini. Do you think the 5 nights in Nafplio might be too many? We are no longer going to Olympia. The 4 days will be allocated as: 1 full day for Nafplio itself, 1 day for Mycenae and Epidauros, 1 day for Hydra, and still researching on where to spend the 4th day - maybe Sparta or whatever is interesting. We don't want one-nighters so we probably will not be going to Monemvasia. Suggestions for any Peloponnesian city within day trip distance from Naflio is welcome.

We are open to the idea of spending another night in Santorini, making it 4 nights instead of 3. We are not "beach types" so the Santorini days will all be land exploration. We plan to rent a car in Santorini for a day.

The Marianna hotel in Nafplio is cancelable and I have not booked our hotel in Oia.
