Wow. Some of "us" used to cite ShellGeoStar.com all the time - - and then about a year ago, they indicated publicly that they were shutting their site down. Looks like they've decided to put it back up. Good news.
The cost of parking is a minor issue. The real problem is the aggrevation, stress and time lost when you take a wrong turn and spend an hour figuring how to get back.

I would look for a place to drop the car on the outskirts or a nearby small town and then train in. In the case of Rome, for example, you might park the car in Orvieto, an hour train ride away. Or you might go to an outer stop on the metro line or commuter rain line.

No matter what else you do, PLEASE get yourself a good, detailed city map of Rome if you are going to drive into the city. It's no more frustrating than any other city to drive in, with the complication that the signs are in Italian, so you should become familiar with most of the frequently seen signs. I agree that the Via Salaria-Via Pinciana route into the Borghese Gardens area is the way to go. I drove that way just last summer, going into Rome from the north toward Via Veneto, which is just south of the Borghese Gardens.

Just returned last night from 12 days in Italy. Spent 3 days in Rome then picked up a rental at Termini and headed for Venice. The best navigational aid we had was a $3 compass that stuck on the windshield. Even though we had directions from the rental office how to get out of Rome, along with several maps, after about three turns we were lost, so we just headed in a northeast direction until we worked our way to the ring road. Driving in the Italian country is relatively easy; it's the parking that can be problematic. In Venice we left the car at the Tronchetto lot. From there we headed for Sorrento with a small detour to San Marino. Headed back to Rome we dropped the car off at the airport. Just be prepared for getting lost--it's part of the adventure and of course, everything takes longer than you expect. Petrol is about 1.05 per liter.

It really is great to have the www.shellgeostar.com site back again. This is purely personal, but I have aunt who lives in Denmark. She was almost like a mother to me when I was growing up. Widowed now, and I have been trying to get her to travel more.

And she is learning to use the internet a little bit. I wrote to her last night to tell her that she ought to look at the shellgeostar.com site. She has already planned out two itineraries today that she says she might like to take!

Her English doesn't seem all that bad to me, but she was tickled to death to see a site like this, available in Danish, as well as the usual languages.
Agree with Rex: GRA to Via Salaria to Villa Borghese Parking Garage ($26.99 for 2 nights for a normal car). Have done this twice in the last year

Don't arrive into Rome during the morning rush--lots of traffic.

Go to Rand McNally and get a laminated map of Rome. They sell one that shows the direction of all the one way streets. You really need this map, a navigator with good eyes, and an open mind....
