I followed up on a Fodors tip and checked out the website www.flyertalk.com. Go to Forums --> Car Rentals --> Avis. The prices from the UK car rental websites are typically lower and offer more inclusive rental packages (CDW, theft insurance, etc.) than the US websites. Look at www.avis.co.uk. I would compare these offers to autoeurope.com and europebycar.com.

If you want a guaranteed automatic, you want to book pretty far out. Last year we rented an Avis auto in Florence (less expensive than others because of discounts found at FlyerTalk). This year ,for my May trip, I tried to reserve from them again but there were no automatics left.
We ended up renting from Italy by car (Thrifty). Their price was WAY less expensive than all others. I had an Alfa Romeo for about 60E/day (all fees included).
I also noticed that this company's (as others) prices change from time-to-time. Book and then check back periodically to see if there's a sale on.
Have a great trip.

I agree with most of the others - book now and continue to check for better rates. If you find one, cancel the original booking. I don't see a downside to that.

I booked a minivan (automatic) for our trip this fall, and I booked it in February. It's still the best deal, but if I find something wonderful elsewhere, I'll snap it up.

Also, my Dad (75 years old) is not allowed to drive the rental vehicle - a shame because he's a great driver. (And we only really "needed" him to drive a couple of very short distances...there are a few hikes that my husband and I would like to do without having to retrace our steps to the car...if Dad could just drive a couple miles down the country road and pick us up, it would have been helpful. Oh well...)

So, I say "book now" - and keep looking!

I am 76 years of age and have found that Hertz has no upper age limit for car rentals in England. I don't know if this rule applies to rentals in Italy.
Thrifty has a limit of 70 years and Enterprise has an upper limit of 75.
Renault does not have an upper age limit for rentals under provisions of their long term lease program.
Enjoy your trip

Thanks don76 for the information. I will look further into this based on your info.

By the way, does anyone know if you can rent those "hoverround" things in Italy? You know those motorized wheel chair type things they advertise on TV? Maybe something like that would be good for my dad to get from the villa to the store?
