How do I get from Heathrow to Gathwick? - fast!??

I am flying into Heathrow on British Midland and I have to catch a flight 2 1/2 hours later out of Gatwick. Can it be done? How long will it take? And what is the best way? Tube? Bus? Taxi? I have never been to London so any specifics would help. Thanks!

Dear Jennifer,
According to Getting about Britain, Winter/Spring 1999, Speedlink and Jetlink coaches connect Heathrow and Gatwick, Speedlink every 15 minutes, trip about 1hour. More information from Speedlink Airport Services [email protected].
However, the Heathrow Express into Paddington is supposed to take 15 minutes, then a cab to Victoria and Gatwick Express which takes about half an hour and might have less chance of getting caught in traffic.Good Luck

What time of day do you get in and leave? I think it may depend on what the road traffic will be like.

And where are you going on to? How long is your check in time?

London's transport system is par excellence and I do not know the specifics, but when you get your luggage you can just ask the information desk of which there are many. Your airline's desk or any other of the well informed tourist desks will be able to help.

I did research on this for this fall's tour and: the tube isn't practical (especially with luggage); Speedlink (the bus) can take a VERY long time; the train is fast BUT you arrive at Paddington from Heathrow, then have to get to Victoria for the Gatwick Express, all with luggage. yuck; taxi or hired car is by far the best (especially with just 2 1/2 hours between flights - which will be 2 hours or less by the time you get through customs, etc.). A pre-arranged hired car is a real luxury; someone to meet you at the gate, help you with your bags, and get you to a waiting car (no lines like for taxis). We're really budget travelers, but peace of mind and comfort is worth a splurge. Do the car.

We just book a flight from Boston to Shannon Ireland, with connections at Heathrow/Gatwick. The British Airways reservations clerk told me that BA provides the transportation between airports, and that luggage is checked all the way through to Shannon.
