I'm with rkkwan. Spend a little more and get some more leg room for that husband of yours.

Can you go sit in a similar sized car in your country at a dealer?

But the Fiesta and Clio are nearly equal in size!

If you want bigger; take a VW GOlf, Opel/Vauxhall Astra, Ford Focus, Renault Megane etc.

It's not about those two cars. It's about the categories.

With all due respect, 5'10 is not tall. I'm 6'3 and I always rent Fiestas, Corsas, or other cars in that group. Legroom is only an issue with those cars if you have passengers in the rear.

I would not book a larger car than necessary. Since 5'10" is not that tall (unless your DH has really long legs) - I'd definitely go for the Escort "or similar". For Ireland I usually recommend that smallest car in which you'd be comfortable. NOT the smallest car offered, but one or two classes up like the Escort. Reason being the roads are very narrow w/ no shoulders, parking spaces are smaller, villages can have cars parked (and double parked) on both sides of the road, etc.

You won't want a bigger car unless it is a must due to excess luggage or more passengers.

Re your World MasterCard - it has already been mentioned - but just to make sure . . . . . You must decline all other insurance if you want the mc coverage. You need Dan Dooley to give you another quote w/o any insurance.

An Escort? Does Ford still make those?

I haven't seen one for a long time.

Does the Ford Fiesta have a back seat? Would it hold 2 25" bags and 2 carry-ons (I know the answer to that is "NO" if there's no back seat? How does it compare to a SmartCar in size? Thanks for the help.

There's no other car like a Smart Car! (Cute but usually impractical).

Fiestas are perfectly normal little cars, with front and back seats.

There's the Toyota iQ - 3.5 seats and no luggage space

As for Fiestas, I've managed to get a doble futon including mattress into a previous (ie smaller) generation) of one. Of course I could have anyone else in the car...
