Hotels in Siena

Can anyone recommend a nice ($250-$300) hotel in the Siena area? Certosa di Maggiano is booked in early June. Thanks!

When in Siena, I like to stay within the walls. The best one probably is the Athena. Still within Siena city limits you may try the Scacciapensieri or the Garden. If you have a car and don't mind driving some, you may try the Relais & Chateaux Borgo San Felice.

Paulo

PS. relevant sites are listed below
http://www.venere.it/it/siena/athena/
http://web.tin.it/villascacciapensieri/caten.htm
http://www.venere.it/it/siena/garden/
http://www.relaischateaux.fr:80/site...de=borgofelice

Garden or the Park. The Park is more remote, you can walk to the Campo from the Garden, but it is a bit of a hike. The Garden has a swimming pool but the rooms are a bit peculiar--remind me of a ship, but certainly acceptable. Ask if either has a shuttle service to the Fortezza parking lot area where you can easily walk to the Campo (even if there is a small charge, it's worth not having to park your car.) Eat at Cane e Gatto--reserve quite ahead--ask your hotel to make the reservation for you before you plan to arrive. Do take time to understand the history of this fascinating city--read about the contrade and why Siena survived in such a medieval state while Florence continued to evolve after the 14th C. It's a city where crime is almost unknown--a wonderful place. Enjoy Siena.

Not in Siena, but we stayed at two different places last year: La Collegiata just outside the old town of San Gimignano and Locanda dell'Amorosa near Sinalunga. I preferred La Collegiata but I think Locanda dell'Amorosa is a little closer.

I stayed at the Athena last year and thought it was dreadful - scruffy, awful bathroom with constantly dripping tap, felt like a youth hostel. I would avoid this place if at all possible.

On a slight aside, I stayed at a wonderful hotel just outside San Gimigniano called "Il Pescille". Very reasonable, beautiful hillside setting in a vineyard with terraced gardens, outdoor pool and immaculate bedrooms with glorious views. No evening meals however, but then San Gim is only a 10min drive. I'd recommend it to anyone.
