Hotels in San Gimignano

What would be a nice hotel in San Gimignano and why (views, balconies, etc??). The three that sound the most interesting are Antico Pozzo, La Cisterna and Bel Soggornio. Appreciate any thoughts.

We've stayed at both La Cisterna and Antico Pozzo. At La Cisterna we had a large room with a tiny balcony (big enough to sit on and sip some wine)and a great view of the hills. Friends of ours stayed there and had a suite that had a large terrace with a great view.

At Antico Pozzo we had a small room (there are larger ones but they were not available.) We looked out on the courtyard patio belonging to the hotel and some (very) distant hills. Antico Pozzo is smaller and that can have it's pluses. La Cisterna is larger though hardly huge. If I returned I'd go for a room at La Cisterna with a terrace. One word of caution--some of the LaCisterna rooms overlook the main square and while they may provide interesting people watching I'd be concerned they could be noisy--go for the terrace!!

I like Leon Bianco- Piazza della Cisterna, 13. F: 0577.942.123.
3 ***, in a 14th century mansion on the square. Roof terrace for drinks, breakfast and relaxing. The best rooms have vaulted ceilings and fabulous views of the Elsa Valley.

Buon Viaggo!

I thought Antico Pozzo was beautiful. It was about $140. (US) for three of us. It's on the main road just a couple of minutes from the main piazza. We loved the city. Try to climb the tall tower early in the morning to catch the fog creeping over the Tuscan countryside. It'll make a believer out of you.

Relais Santa Chiara just outside the centro storico gates is also a real treat. The first time we stayed there was "accidental." After driving for hours and arriving at our original hotel selection we found ourselves in one of those unfortunate situations where the guidebooks were WRONG and couldn't face a night there. We stumbled over the Relais and what a great treat! The helpful staff, beautiful pool area, great rooms and general atmosphere. We can't wait for our next visit in September 2001.

We stayed at La Cisterna. It was fine, but we were disappointed that we couldn't land a room with a view of the hills -- we were promised a "panoramic view" room, but it turned out to be a view of the village square. Disappointing, though not noisy. Thought the staff seemed bored and unenthusiastic. The views from the best rooms, however, are spectacular. If you can get one of those, go for it.
