Hotels In Salzburg

We are travelling to Salzburg in early January and need some help in making a hotel decision. I have heard wonderful things about the Goldener Hirsch and Hotel Rosenvilla and we can't decide. Has anyone stayed at one or both of these hotels and can you comment on your stay? (Goldener Hirsch has an excellent location, but Rosenvilla is small and we would be 1 of only a few guests. I have also heard their breakfast is sumptuous) Thank you for your help.

Hi Jennifer:
I always hate it when you ask a question, and people answer something else. But here it goes:
We've stayed at the Hotel Altstadt and just loved it. Friends of ours were very satisfied with the Hotel Elefant. Both places are recommended by www.karenbrown.com
Sorry to add more to the possibilities.

Sorry Jennifer, I must do as the previous poster did and recommend another place. We have twice stayed at the Hotel Trumer Stube in Salzburg. It is an easy walk to everything, but the best part is the owners. They are so nice, speak every language, and are happpy to provide anything you need. The hotel is not fancy, just homey, convenient, nice breakfast, and very comfortable. Have a great time! Don't forget to eat at the restaurant with the elevator in the side of the hill by the castle...the name escapes me at the moment...DELICIOUS and a great view...

We also stayed at the Hotel Trumer Stube a couple of years ago and agree it is a great location at a very good price. We were only there one night, but would not hesitate to stay there again. One warning, though, if you have a car, it is not too easy navigating thru all those little narrow streets.

Jennifer,

well, it seems hard to decide, maybe I can help as being a local?

Just tell me what kind of accommodation you are looking for and I will come up with some great places for your visit.

To Gina, who recommended a restaurant near the castle: well, that place is called the "Winkler" but has closed down last January ... sorry, here goes the great food with the great views, we miss it, too!

Jennifer, my apologies as I respond to Micia's questions --

Micia,
Although I haven't been to Salzburg yet, I've been researching my visit there in Jan. I've found this information that may help you.

There seem to be three Christmas markets:

one on Cathedral Square & Residenz Square, runs 29 Nov - 24 Dec, goes daily 10.00 - 20.00 and 9.00 - 20.30 on weekends.

one on Mirabell Sq, runs 29 Nov - 24 Dec, goes daily 9.00 - 19.00.

an Advent Market at the Hohensalzburg Fortress on every Advent weekend.

All of these have music & choral groups performing.

You can find this info on the web at www.salzburginfo.or.at, then click on "English" then click "Culutre/Events." You can also get a map of the city (to pinpoint these locations) at the "Get to Know" button, then click on "Virtual Walking Tour." I think any hotel you find in the old city or close to the old city will give you easy access to these markets. You can also find hotels (and their locations) at the website.

I wish you luck!

s

Rupert - Thank you for your response, but we have since booked our rooms at the Goldener Hirsch for our trip to Salzburg. I would like to know if you are familiar at all with the Mozart Dinners and if they are touristy or worth attending?
