hotels in paris' 6th

we are going to be in paris and want to stay in the 6th - perhaps in the rue Jacob area. i would like to keep the rate under $250 US. several years ago, we stayed at the d-Aubusson which was very nice, but the prices have escalated. the hotel of 2 continents has been suggested. any other hotels in that area that we should consider? we are going to be there the last week in october. thanks.

Dear Mike!!!!

Maybe you can try the Hotel Left Bank Saint Germain, it is in the same area and it is a 3 star hotel with a little bit the same style as the Hotel d'Aubusson...there are tapestries but it remains very modern concerning the staff and the services! I'm not sure about their tarrifs because it depends on the period you will come to Paris. But you can look on their website to have an idea of what they propose: www.leftbankstgermain.com. I hope you will find a good hotel in this area...because it is one of the most fun of Paris!! Enjoy your trip!

I've stayed at the above mentioned Left Bank Hotel (a Best Western, by the way). The rooms and baths were nice, but dark and a bit gloomy. I was also turned off by not being able to individually adjust the air conditioning and we nearly froze half the time in the middle of the summer.

I'd again recomment Le Regent, just a few doors from the d'Aubusson. Only go for a superior room. They aren't huge, but well planned and nicely decorated. We stayed there several times and if we weren't renting apartments these days, that's still where I'd stay. Right about $200 US a night for a superior room.

I checked with Le Regent around June and they quoted me 200 euro for a superior room (20 sq. m.) and 210 euro for the luxury superior room (23 sq. m.). All the superior rooms face the front I believe. Anyway, the rate will be a bit higher than $200 US.

We stayed at the Hotel Des Deux Continents several years ago and the rooms can be really small. While the location is great, just be aware that you might be getting a room that is no wider then 6 or 7 feet.

You might check the Hotel Artus (formerly the Hotel Buci Latin.) The rooms are a bit more modern and reasonably spacious for the area. Not sure about the rates but I believe we paid less then that a few years ago. However, that was for November so certainly rates might be more then your price target. The location is great as it's just a 1/4 block to the Blvd. St. Germain.

My wife and I are taking our granddaughter to Paris in October also. We, for the second time, will stay at the Pas des Calais which we like- very nice and very central to blvd. St Gearmaine. We have also stayed at Le Sainte Beuve. Check them out.

Others htat have been recommended here, keeping in mind that they are not at the same level as the D'Aubusson (which I love, and which is a 4-star) are the Bonaparte, and the Grand Hotel des Balcons. Doubles will be well under 200 euro.

We stayed at the Hotel St. Germain in the 6th, 88 Rue de Bac (150 euro) for a double in '02. It was a nice, small hotel with lots of charm and very well positioned. We loved it.

francophile, you are right. I was thinking of their July and August rates at 168 euro per night for the superior. In fact their website now shows the regular rate for superior rooms at 210 euro.

I strongly recommend the Madison (see my review of the hotel on this site yesterday): great location, attractive rooms. Try Orbitz for discounted rates; we paid 220€ in September, a premium month in Paris.

Underhill, was the rate for a superior room at the Madison, or just the standard double? Your description was very comprehensive, by the way. Thx.

I've stayed in this particular district almost annually since 1981 and would recommend the Hotel de Seine at 52 rue de Seine. Great location. I stayed there for a decade. Or try the Hotel le Clement....6, rue Clement across from the Marche St. Germain. Happy Travels!

Our rate was for a deluxe twin, facing the boulevard.

No, no, wrong! The rate was for a superior double; I was thinking of the much less nice Beau Rivage in Nice. But that's another story--I posted a long review on tripadvisor.com and won't repeat it here.

We stayed at the Hotel Artus for 190 euro per night in July. The room was fine (although the shower was very small...go for a room with a tub). But, the staff was amazing and the location was great! Would definitely stay there again.

I second the Hotel Madison in the St. Germain area. One tip, though - don't book directly through them. We booked through hotels.com and got a much better rate, or 170 euro. When I wrote to the hotel to confirm and ask whether it was a courtyard or boulevard room, they said that the rate I got excluded breakfast (which was fine) and that it was a courtyard view. They said that if I wanted a boulevard view that I had to go with their 220 rate. We didn't. And guess what - we had a lovely boulevard view room anyway!

Guenmai, I believe you're the only person who has recommended Hotel de Seine recently. I had asked about the hotel a few months ago and no one had anything to say. And it seems that a few years ago I read some really negative reviews about the hotel here.

So how is it really like at the hotel? How are the rooms and the staff?

It may be helpful to others who are interested in the hotel. Thanks.

It's been a while since I've stayed there due to the price increase.I basically stayed there when my dear friend, hotel manager, Mr. Grandville was there...but he retired...around 1990-1991 and then passed away some years ago. After, the big renovation...1990-1991, I checked the place out several times and of course it doesn't have the warmth that it had when Mr. Garndville managed the place for about 35 years straight... I think, but it's all about LOCATION to me in Paris. I don't go to Paris for great hotels...I've been going there almost annually since 1976 and haven't found any hotel that was anything to really write home about. If I want extraordinary hotels, then I go to Bangkok...and the rest of Southeast Asia for that. So, in Paris, as long as the hotel is clean and not noisy and in a great location, then I'm fine with the place. And as long as the price isn't outrageous...Paris hotels are GREATLY overpriced.I lived in room 52 for about a decade and it was a quiet room. Happy Travels!
